i'm revamping the electrical on my tank and would like to get rid of the cheap little coralife job i have. any input would be appreciated

I also have used intermatics, but mostly the kind that have a wheel on them (non-digital). I've been looking for a good digital timer with a ground and a battery (so it keeps time over a power outage). They don't seem all that easy to come by... unless I'm missing something.

I've used Intermatic mechanical timers for years on all my tanks. I have a Neptune AC III with a DC8 and HD DC4 for my big tank now. I use a Ranco for my chiller.

I got a digital timer from homedepot it was 30sh I think it has two plugs and has daily programs it works good I will try to snap a pic tonight

I've been using the orange heavy duty grounded timers from wal-mart for years with good sucess. I just got an AC Jr. though and should have it hooked up soon.

I bought a couple of the cheap 10 bucks timers that the LFS had. They are the dial type. I got them when I started and have been using them for two years now with no problems.

Speaking of timmers, I had a incedent this week...I was very lucky I was not out of town because my dial timmer got stuck in the ON position. I noticed my halides were still on way late one night and went downstairs to investigate and the timmer wouldn't turn off at all. The person who checks the tank when I am gone would be here during normal light times and would not have known the lights were on all night for who knows how many nights!!! It is one of those aquarium types with 4 outlets controlled by the timmer dial and 4 constant hot outlets. The timmer side wouldn't turn off no matter what setting or even in the manuel override setting. Naturally it was the halide timmer that got stuck on which could have turned out to be really bad had I been on vacation or something. Exact same thing happened to Dave (ol'salty) North TN clubs daughter. Wiped her tank out because she was on vacation and her halides got stuck on. Killing the xenia first which poluted the water hence killing everything else is what people think happened :(. I am in the market for a new timmer now ;)

My timer is whoever is home to turn the lights off... I never go on vacation, if I do...someone is always home, and my brother lives 3 houses down. Serious though, I do need to invest in some timers so I don't always have to rely on someone turnin' them on/off.

thanks for the replies everyone. i think i'm going to go with some digital Intermatics i've seen on homedepot.com. I'm still on the fence though, because i'm debating on building a power station. i've seen some really nice ones on the main RC board.

I dont remember my timer, but it is digital, battery so it wont lose time, and I got it for FREE! Perks of being a rep. They are selling them at TSC, so I will look tomorrow and get you the name. very cool as it adjusts and sets its time automatically and does DST!

if your gonna run mhi or vho i'm using a solar 1000 it has a little of everything; ph-temp set up for summer/winter cycles, you have a manual override to turn tank on or off. look it up on web.

I use an RK2 unit to control my heater, MHs, T5s, and cooling fans. Also constantly monitors my ph and temperature with probes. I highly recommend it, it's a super unit. I aslo built a custom power box that houses the RKS DC8 plug bank and a DJ 100 8 plug bank. If you are interested I have photos of my build just PM me.
