What to do, What to do..???

Hmmm..

I have about 160 lbs of dead sand. It is all sugar size aragonite.

I just bought 15 lbs of LS from Figi to seed the dead sand with. But it is kind of a dingy grey color, not aragonite. So I'm trying to decide if I mix it in with the white stuff.

I'm looking to have a good DSB in the new system and perhaps in 6 months it really won't matter that there are two kinds of sand in the mix.

Any thoughts?

If the live sand matches the average grain size of the dead sand, you should be good to go. If it is larger, the infauna in the live sand likely won't like the sugar-sized sand, and I would pass on mixing it in. The infauna that make your DSB function as a biofilter are very particular about the grain sizes (and to some degree the shapes), but could care less about the color or composition.

BTW, when you say "mix it in," I assume you're not being literal. You should "pour it on top." Avoid stirring live sand in a DSB as much as possible.
