I have my mushrooms low, practically on the sand bed and I don't feed them anything, they may be getting some food when I feed some of my sps corals but for the most part it is just the light.
The mushrooms do not need target feeding, just feed your fish above the mushrooms and they will be fine, or, like i do, put the fish food near the powerheads so it spreads.
Mushrooms do great without any food. That said, I have not yet seen a mushroom that will not eat. Common mushrooms are tricky to get eating. If you turn off all the flow and put a piece of food on them, they will close around it. They are just very slow and not very sticky, so they won't get any food with the pumps on.
I keep my mushrooms (rics) at the bottom of my 55. They seem to grow and thrive even with the basic coralife 4x65 w/ pc light fixture.
I do not target feed them. If they do happen to catch anything when I do feed, I'll normally keep the clown fish away from them until they've had the opportunity to take the food in.
