What to put in a refugium

What is the right way to load up a refugium. I have some chaeto. Do I put that in or do I use caulerpa? I am setting one up today. Do I use mud or sand or a combo of both? Should I try to divide the glass aquarium and have two sides?

Just use the Cheato. Its as good as anything and doesn't have the downside of Caulerpa polluting things

I have some sand, some rubble, some chaeto, some other thicker green stuff originally from Rod's, Iso 'm told. Also some mangroves which seem to do a great job of removing organics.

Yup, I put some rubble a DSB and cheato in mine. I also have a mangrove but I think I'm killing it.

What's the mangrove doing?

I have like 12 or so that I've grown from seeds. I don't run my skimmer much anymore because it doesn't produce anymore.

The leaves dried up and fell off now the top is turning brown but the stalk is still green. The roots don't look so great either.
