i am about to setup an auto top off for my tank. i need something that will be able to be in a somewhat visible place and not be obvious or ugly.
any suggestions, also, are there any plastics i should not use?

For plastics, anything that is made for drinking water purposes is good. Some people successfully use gasoline/kerosene containers, though I'm not comfortable with that.

For water changes, I've been using a 7 gallon water jug (blue) that I bought at Wal-Mart from the camping section. For my ATO container, I'm using a 5 gallon square-shaped plastic water container that I bought from LFS; it sits inside the stand and its fed via a peristalic pump thats controlled by a float switch in the main tank.

I use the Blue plastic drums (30g) that are used for food storage. They are FDA approved for water storage. I bought it at Graingers. You could also get them at some major Plastic distributors.

I just use a 5 gallon bucket for my auto topoff. I use a rubbermaid brute trashcan for my ro/di water container.
