I thought "grades" are just a marketing gimmick that vendors use to jack up the price and that there is no official grading system. Am I wrong?

You're probably right

Instead of worrying about grades, worry about how much you like the look.

I have a thing for nice solid blue croecas (thinking of adding one soon to my tank), may not be the ultra fancy green speckled multi colored look, but nice none the less.
