looking into buying a eel! i really like the look of the zebra eel! just not sure what i should buy! anyone have any suggestions one what kind i should buy and y! thanks

Zebras are not normal fish eaters. Mine is in his cave a lot but does stick his head out when there is a commotion and when I feed him he's very active. Love him much morethan the SFE I had

I love my fimbriated moray eel aka yellow-headed moray. It's a fish-eater if it gets hungry enough, but for the past 3 years has stayed away from my little fishies which would all be an easy snack. They only grow to about 3ft so are manageable in most home aquariums.

Mine comes out at night and roams the tank, swimming from end to end. During the day, he'll stay in his cave with his head sticking out, just like you see on the Discovery Channel. :)

I have a jewel moray. Its a great eel for someone who does not have small fish. They only get about 24 inches and they spend a lot of time out. Mine hand feeds and is very social.

If it wasn't for those teeth I would have got one instead of my Zebra. :hmm2:

Hey Brad, one big question is how big is your system?

I only say this cause Eels tend to be a preferance of what you like that will fit in to your system. If I had a few extra $$'s without a doubt I would own a Japanese Horned Dragon Moray. But overall budget and love of the colors led me to get a snowflake eel, and my eel has been very good to me so far and I have no complaints.

if your system isnt big enough for some of these eels, ghost ribbon eels do really well compared to other ribbon eels

if you don't have small fish, there are quite a few cool eels for a tank that size...I'll second on the fimbriatus. I have one and it is a stunning specimen, not as active as some others though

G. Miliaris (goldentail moray). I've had two, one decided carpet surfing would be a good idea and the other is still kicking. Ive had short term success with various shrimps but both eels were housed with a pair of clownfish and ive never seen them the eel attempt to make them a meal

I'd say no cause they are always looking for food. My zebra doesn come out unless food is in the water so I honestly think I could do without a top... But I'm not dumb enough to try

Are larger SFE's less apt to escape the tank? I had a small one many years ago and it always found ways to escape my tank.

That is a good question. Even before I bought my eel through stories I read, I bought industrial velcro, and glued window screen material to it as to make a fort knox outa my tank, when I need in, I peel it back and in I go, do what I need, and pinch it back shut, its been a good tactic for me, a little ghetto looking up close but from 10feet back looks like a 2 inch border around my tank. So far, no eel jerky for me!
