What's a Good RO/DI unit???

There are many appreciated ones on the market. I as many recommend www.purelyh20.com They are a sponsor of Reef Central and offer a discount. They also sell a TDS meter. Their system, price, customer service etc is excellent. I have enjoyed this ro/di system. What is your price range?
 
I (and at least a few others) have the Typhoon III from air water ice (if I type it right it is going to filter it... for whatever reason... so just put them together into one word and add a dot com). I know the company donated a few gift certificates for the swap. The only problem I had with mine was that the slip fit connector for attaching the input line to my washing machine line leaked really slowly. I notified the company and a replacement was overnighted to me in less than 24 hours from the time I contacted them. The unit comes with a hand-held TDS meter (spend a little bit extra on the dual, inline meter that will let you check the output of the RO and the output of the DI with just the flip of a switch). The unit also comes with a "fast flush" valve that is supposed to prolong the life of the membrane if you routinely leave it sit without running water through it for a couple days.

Obviously, there are plenty of options (and I guess that depends a lot on your budget) but I have had a pretty good experience with mine. In any case, an RO/DI unit is the single biggest labor saver that I've purchased for my tanks.
 
Yep. Several of us have the Typhoon system from air water ice. I purchased the Typhoon 1 and over time added a TDS meter. The Typhoon 1 is the same as the Typhoon III, but the T3 comes with a bunch of extras (including a TDS meter). It is really worth it to go ahead and get the T3 if you can afford it, but the water quality will be the same with each. They have been in the biz for 26 years, and have a lifetime warranty along with a 30 day guarantee. PurelyH2O, Buckeye Field Supply, The Filter Guys, and SpectraPure all also have good units. I prefer the filter combo of the Typhoon, and the price is great for what you get. As Brian mentioned, AWI also supported our swap.

The 75 gpd membrane is better than the 100 gpd (more efficient). The basic advantage is it will preserve your DI resin. I'm going on 2500+ gallons of RO/DI on mine and I'm still on the same DI resin with 0 TDS.

You won't find a better guy than Russ. His knowledge and personal assistance setting things up when I had a question was great. Prices are good too.

Also, make sure you don't get one of those 100gpd units. 75gpd is what you want to get because the RO membrane for that one is the best. Filmtec RO membrane are the best.
 
The Typhoon III sounds great to me, it's at my price range. My only problems is that I don't know where I'm going to install it nor do I know how to install one.....Need to know all that stuffs so I can find the proper place to install it and ordering the proper parts. Thanks guys for helping me out, next if you can come over and show me where and what I should order then help me install it...lol.... :D
 
Thats the one thing that has kept me from gettin' a RO unit. I'm affraid I would'nt know how to install or use it right...

Mike- It comes with clamps to install to into your under sink plumbing if you can install it somewhere in or near a sink. I'm no plumber, so that made me nervous. I also had a little closet next to my washing machine closet where I could run water. So, I bought a y-splitter/valve and a garden hose adapter (they sell them as a package). I just screwed the y into the cold water washing machine feed, screwed the wash line into one of the outputs and screwed the garden hose adapter onto the other. From that, the fitting is just a push-fit and everything is pretty easy. Consider a float valve depending on how you want to set it up so that you don't need to worry (as much) about accidentally leaving the filter on. What you need to figure out first is where you can put the filter, then figure out how you are going to make it work.
 
I have a sink right next to my washer and dryer and installed mine above that sink. I got a Tee from lowes that I installed in the cold water line under the sink, and then get the water for the RO unit from that. I also could have done a Y off of the cold water feed to the washer, like Brian did. The main reason I installed in my laundry room is because I feed the waste water line into the same drain that the washer dumps its waste water. The Typhoon comes with the item you need to run the waste water line to the sink drain plumbing. Lowe's sells many other parts, so if you have room to install it, you should be able to get it going.

I measured mine, and the dimensions are 22" wide by about 15 1/2" high. That is about how much space you'd need.
 
Angela did -- at least one similar to that one. They stink. Cheap up front, but cost more in the long run...

True, I would not recomend a ebay cheap-o. Not very well made, my auto shut off valve just had to be replaced also on top of my membrane going bad within 8 months of use. Cheap pre-filters all the same size let too much stuff through to the membrain. Spend a little more up front and it pays for itself in the end. :)
 
Air water ice has a reefkeeper for 139.00 it also comes with a tds meter. The reefkeeper is a 5 stage ro/di unit with portable tds.

The compact reefkeeper uses a horizontal small DI cartridge which isn't near as good as a regular vertical one. I'd spend the extra few $ and get one of the units with a vertical DI.

Thanks Jack for the measurement, that's what I was gonna ask next....I measured the space available in the laundry area and it's not wide enough so I'm gonna look for another solution. I hate to install it under the sink because I want to see everything while in progress.
 
i have a SpectraPure 5 stage ro/di unit. I really like this unit and got a great price on this unit. I also have a 3 gallon storage tank and a premate pump to decrease waste water. This unit is connected to my sump tank via a float valve and preforms automatic water top-offs. i got this unit from a place called justphish dot com. hope this helps ya.
