What's causing this

That's an extremely hard to keep Goniopora that is notorious for dying in captivity. Post in the LPS forum for some pointers.
 
Don't those things require a lot of nutrients in the water? That is one coral I have never tied to keep.
 
Don't take my advice cause I'm a noob. I have one and had the same problem with it. Lost about half of it. Started target feeding it more and the loss stopped. Zero regrowth so far. Very disappointing cause they are so attractive. I wanted to get a second one of a different color but I doubt I will chance one again.
 
I've had Alveoporas for quite a while in a low nutrient system, I've heard they're hardier and have a very similar look. You could frag the living portions on either side and junk the dying part. If they're at all like alveopora in their structure you can slice through the skeleton on it fairly easily with a razor blade or knife
