WHat's the difference between Crocea and Maxima Clams?

I bought a clam yesterday it was sold to me as a maxima but the more i look into the species the more i think it's a crocea.

I can't post a pic right now but i thought someone might be able to tell me some differences between the 2 species.

the shape of the shell is the best way to tell.croceas have a shell that is shaped more like the kind of clams that we eat,it's shell is also smother then a maxima and my have some shuts just under the mantle. a maximas shell is more elongated ,most of the time will have shutes over the whole shell.

color is not a good way to ID clams,u need to look at the shell.where did u get it and how big is it

i got it from my lfs it' 3.5" or so

the shell is very smooth unlike the pictures of the maxima so i believe tha it is a crocea.

The only reason iasked if there was a difference in coloration was becasue the maxima's seem to be mostly blue and black. the one i have is blue and black but then closer to the center on the mantel the color is much more gold then goes back to blue.

I'll post a pic when i get home.

By the way, it's not shutes, it's scutes. Maxima's have scutes all over it's shell. Sorry, just trying to edumicate ya'all!
