Hater of Hair Algae
tail fin??? he doesn't have anyother spots just this one on his tail. Sorry about the pic quality, he's such a fast swimmer he's hard to photograph. This is the best pic I could get of his tail fin.

The best way to explain what the spot looks like (since the picture sucks!) is it looks like he's swimming around with a piece of white lint on the very tip of his fin that I just want to pull off! It's driving me crazy! I just hope it's not ich. could it be a piece of his tissue? I'll try to get another photo.

He's nibbling at the brown algae I let grow onto my QT. I have seen him nibble a little bit on some garlic and vitachem soaked algae. I just got him yesterday and he hasn't been in QT for even 24 hrs yet, and that's usually how long it takes the fish I've had to really start eating. In my tank he looks a little thin, but not too bad, don't worry I spoil my fish in QT, he'll be fat in no time!

I'm just concerned about that darn white spot on his tail fin. I don't know if I should treat him or not. My temp is 82 and I'm feeding garlic. The lfs ( a good one) I got him from said they run a little bit of copper in their systems and treat any diseases/parasites quickly, and it shows. He did however, have this spot when I bought him, so I don't know what to think. I just want to pull it off!

IMO copper should always be a last resort especially when it comes to tangs, You should try hyposalinity.

Why go hyposalinity when you dont even know what it is yet?

I have had those plenty on my yellow tangs.

Is it just like a little white lump on his tail, its pure white?

So when you're fish has what could possibly be a disease, you just leave it. When the fish could be stressed.

Im guessing its a parasite and would say go hypo. Unless it gets a positive ID.

on another note...I bought some Rod's Food yesterday in anticipation of future fish and corals and was wondering if anyone has seen tangs "go crazy" for this stuff? I'm coming up on the 24hr mark and I'm starting to get anxious to see him really eat.

I'm doing a WC and I think since I have a pep. shrimp that's occasionally cleaning my YT, I'll wait and see how he does in the next day or so and if the spot gets bigger or more spots appear I will remove the shrimp and start hypo right away. I work at home and the QT is in my office so monitoring him won't be a problem.

His point is, hyposalinity is also stressful for the fish. If you subject a patient to treatment before diagnosis in your future profession, it can end up being harmful. The same applies to fish.

Subjecting a fish to hyposalinity before you have a reasonable idea of it's disease is equivalent to subjecting a patient to chemo the minute they find a lump anywhere on their body. If the lump isn't cancer, they lost all their hair for no reason, and you harmed them more than you helped.

As for my diagnosis of that fish? I'm not sure what the spot is, but I agree it's common for tangs and other fish to get them, and I think the proper thing is already being done. QT the fish, with a cleaner shrimp, in the best conditions you can. Feed it, make it strong, and hopefully it's immune system and the shrimp will clear up the problem.

If the spots spread or become more numerous, then go hypo.

What i meant was, instead of copper i didn't mean do it now i meant instead of using copper hyposalinity should be used, its my fault for not explaining things clearly.

Hmmm... he really doesn't look thin at all to me. A thin YT usually is distintcly thin in the dorsal fin area, yours looks very normal... including the lateral line. If it were one of mine, I'd start by feeding him some Nori soaked in Garlic Guard, the speck would most likely be gone in the morning. Tangs are notoriuos for having small break outs when stressed, you'll learn quickly that they usually aren't as bad as you think. Tangs also take a liking to cleaner shrimp real quick and will almost force the shrimp to pollish them up on a regular basis. I really don't think you have anything to worry about if he's eating.

Your right about the tang-shrimp reltaionship. My convict was in the QT before the YT and both of them practically forced the shrimp to clean them.........it's pretty funny.

I've been feeding purple sea veggies and ocean nutrition green algae soaked in garlic elixir. Where do I get Nori from??? I've been looking at the grocery stores and lfs and can't find it. Where's the hookup?

I'm about to add a little rod's food to my DT to see how the convict reacts to it before adding it to the QT.

His belly looks thin and can just see his ribs. but as he's new that explains it because i know some LFS and shippers will starve there tangs to stop them pooping in the bag and releasing ammonia.
