Does anybody know what this thing is? I just noticed it in my tank a couple days ago.

It looks like it may be some kind of coral, but I've only got a single 40 watt fluorescent bulb above my tank.

that would be an aiptasia anenome, it's not something you want in there at all.

There are numerous ways to deal with him, peek around the forums, it is a subject which is covered all too frequently.

See that sticky thread from waterkeeper at the top of the page here?? Take a peek and click the link for aiptasia towards the bottom.

definitely aiptasia...I tried everything (joes, aiptasia stop, pep shrimps) and the only thing that worked was to throw a mug of water in the microwave and heat it up for 2 min. Get a baby medicine syringe and fill it up...Approach the center slowly and inject it with the boiling water. I killed 10+ aiptasia that were all 2+" long.

You've got to get rid of that aptasia PRONTO. They begin to reproduce in a hurry when they get that large. Don't try to scrap it off it will only make things worse! I got some live rock off a local that had a few and I injected them with a needleless syringe- stuff called Aptasia Control- it works like a charm.

what do they do that's bad? I'm still a newbie, so forgive the ignorance

They spread like the plaque, and will sting anything that they get close to.
