what's up with Blastos mysteriously receeding?

Does anybody else have a problem with their blastomussas dying for no apparent reason? I've had mine for 4-6 months and some have started to receed. It starts with one polyp, then another. Remaining polyps are open and look healthy. They are under med-low light and medium flow. I feed them mysis sometimes. I moved some to my prop tank to see if the reduced flow will help. SPS and other lps look great. Is there anything I can try to help them heal?

JM2C...my Blasto Merletti's were being picked at by my Sexy Shrimp, do you hae any of these little buggers? Could also be salinity...

Are they blasto merletti's or wellsi's? I have heard lately that wellsis will start to recede for no apparent reason.

FWIW, my merletti's have been in my tank for 6 months and spreading quickly.

they are all wellsi. i occasionally target feed - is this a requirement? i only have 2 fire shrimp. parameters:

1.026
dkh - 9
Ca- 410
pH~8.1
temp - 78.5

i don't test any others, but assume all is well cause sps are health.

any more ideas?

they do require more foods than your average corals IMO what kind og flow is the coral getting?

Fire shrimp will molest them, especially if you target feed. I no longer target feed, they do fine but multiply very slowly. However, it is a common problem for wellsi's to receed like that, there was a lot of talk about it a year ago.

What kind of light does it get? Many of us have found that it's possible to nurse back colonies under low light (I have several doing great under 20w PC right now). All of mine in my display tank are in a cave that only allows indirect light to reach them.

I have the same problem, i've gotten rid of most of my blastos because of this. 1 year old colony suddenly loose a polyp or two. Don't know why this happens but it does. Its happen to all of my blastos wellsi unfortunately.

A few of mine did the same thing, I'll no longer buy any more welsi

Me to....... :(

All of mine died.... started with one then all of them... in retrospect I should have probably tried fragging them or dipping. But it's too late now.

Look at this pic, on one end tons of babies, and on the other recede? Who knows why?

if you notice blastos that are being sold by members/websties, many of them are already receding. Thats why i stopped buying them too.

thanks guys a ton. i remember a few weeks......maybe a month ago i posted a response in somones thread about them just suddenly dying and a guy swore that they dont just start receding for no reason. he acted as if i just didnt know how to care for them lol.
but on the bright side i have had success stopping receding blastos by reducing light, and giving them lugols dips.also if it starts spreading to more then just one or two, i break out the dremel and clear cut away all the polyps that are looking shaky.
ive had blastos for quite some time now and have colonys that have had a few birthdays lol and through this time ive learned alot. it seems that as they recede its continually passed from one polyps to the next like a forrest fire going through a forrest. its not the kinda thing that is givin to the whole colony all at once imo. ive also discovered that blasto are restricted to low lighting. (yes when they arent doing well low light is the way to go but) i actually have blastos multiplying faster then normal rates up high on the rockwork directly under 250w mh's. the trick to it is to move them up super slowly and gradually, giving months to adjust for every couple inches moved.
also just last month ive experienced my very first blasto polyp "bail out". ive had acans do it in the past a few times but with blastos this is a first. the little guy is doing well in my sump and has attached itself to a piece of rubble.

how is yoru flow on teh colony?

Low-moderate flow. You think its a flow issue? Don't think so tho, because i've had some that receded and they were in a no flow location. :(
