What's with peroxide?

Seems to be that a lot of people are using peroxide to kill algae? I got some rocks with some pest/green hair algae on them and would like to be able to fairly quickly bring them around. They're in a bin in salt water right now. If I heavily dose peroxide with a powerhead, how long until I can scrub, change water and repeat? I expect I would then change water a couple of times, make sure the rocks look good to go and then use?

I've used peroxide at doses up to 1ml / gallon for in-tank treatment of dinos without losing corals, including SPS, followed by sucking out the dead algae and a 25% water change.

Not sure what you would have to use for hair algae. I would probably do 3-4 treatments to make sure I got all of the residual algae before using the rock. Might also keep the rock in the dark during the process as well if there's no coral or anything on it.

Cool, yeah that's what I was thinking. It's in a covered bin now, but I can kill and scrub and stuff. I also want to try to adequately rinse out any phosphate in the rock. I guess it will just come out in time and there is likely still stuff in my old rock. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.

Today is aquascape day. Or at least day 1.

I've used it before too. 1ml per gallon of 3% H202. It kills flatworms and dinoflagellates too. If you treat an aquarium though it can kill more than just algae (like good bacteria ) and set your biology back. It's best just in a bucket as a dip. Just scrub the dead algae off. I recommend food grade though. It's like $15 on Amazon.

I was able to create all of the structures I wanted without using that rock, so I have time to leave it in the dark with a koralia 4 and peroxide and see what happens. I'll change out the water in a day or two and see how it is doing. I'll use it as rocks to grow zoas of chalices on, probably sliced creatively to make the most of it.
