What's your discount for used equipment?

Matty's thread made me think about it.

For me, if it's a high quality item (Tunze, ATI, ER) I think it needs to be a 20-25% discount from what I can get it new before I'd bite. For normal items (Mag pumps, maxijets, heaters) I'm thinking more like 40%. And that's assuming good condition.

I agree...I know we all want to get out what we can, but lets be realistic..If I can get a big ticket item for $40 buck more new, I'll get new...

pretty much how I feel also...and those discounts are pretty much the common in my sponsored hobby also...even NIB pretty much has to be at least 20% lower than can be bought new...It sucks when you are trying to sell something that you bought and haven't used...but can't return it for some reason or the other. And if you used it even for a day...you might as well realize you will need to be 30% to 40% below new...

Coming from experience of selling $1000's and $1000's on forums...you can increase your chance of selling by giving a total price of what you are selling including shipping and PayPal fees...If I think I realistically can get $90 for an item...I will sell for $100...which will always include shipping and paypal...people on line want the bottom line...if you are asking $100...that is what they expect to send you...they don't want to hear well...now you owe me an extra $20 for shipping and paypal fees...

Sorry if I am stepping on anybody's toes by my comments...but that is just the reality of selling items on any hobby specific forum. You will always get low-balled...just got to get used to it and just nicely say "sorry, can't go that low...but thanks for the offer..and not take it as an insult...

OH BTW...what really sucks...Reefing is my "cheap" hobby! ugh...

after surfing through so many threads.

I can only think that maybe there is some value added for field testing...or maybe it's the gold plated limited edition collectors model 11 year old little giant they are selling.

Kidding.

Some folks go the other end of the spectrum and pratically give it away to you to. It probably comes back around. But yeah, charging someone something that is used that now may have no warranty, or trouble proving it and it's like barely off for the shipping. That's kinda bordering on trying to take someone for a thrashing. Unless it's perfectly new in the box and they have it and will fork over the reciept for warranty might be a reasonable exception.

I notice you mention RC helicoptors in your sig. One of my winter projects is an RC plane...my first since I was 17. I hope that's not the hobby you were mentioning!

Yeah...that is what I was talking about...been doing it for years...mostly fly turbine or high end electric stuff these days...I sort of took this year off and only made it to 4 events...talked with my sponsors about it first and got the OK from them...hope to be back in the saddle next year...retiring from 24 years in the Navy really was a life changing ordeal...didn't think it would be...but it has been...not to mention living in NE Ohio again has really been a change!

It really depends upon what is being sold. There are some instances where the item is rather difficult to buy new. For example, when the Tunze nanostreams came out, you couldn't find them anywhere. In that case, I believe some people were actually selling them used at a profit. Of course, now that they are available, one would expect to save some money buying used. But yeah, if I can buy something new for 15% more than what someone is selling used, that is what I'll do.

I browse the Used goods forum all the time and by now have a pretty good idea for what most things can be sold at. Every now and then you'll find some extremely good deal, but mostly prices are about where you'd expect. I have noticed certain people sell stuff constantly and for practically retail prices. I'm thinking these people use the forum as a little side business. It really bothers me, I don't know why...

I figure if its not a really good deal then I'll buy new. I have dumped off stuff really cheap... then need it again and can't find a deal close to what I gave. drives me crazy!

lol

OT. I for some reason really like zoas and want to get them all!
$50-100 a polyp drives me nuts!
I guess maybe if I had them and could fetch that price I would be ok with it!

I feel that evenyone has a right to ask what ever price they want, and then sit and watch it not sell. Then in time if they want the item to sell then the price will come down until someone in the market will buy it. But it is the sellers right to ask what ever they want for the item. That is unless they are obnoxiously bumping their thread 12 times a day or something.

I personally don't find a $40 price drop on a $740 item to be convincing enough for me. But that is my own personal opinion.
