What is your favorite Anthias species that you have had success keeping? Include a photo if you have any. I'm trying to decide what to replace my deceased Lyretail with. Looking to add just a single male, unless a really peacful species.

Bartlett. Stunning! Hardy, eat like pigs, have that delicate anthia "look" to them with the pointed snout and all, and less scrappy than lyretails.

I had a trio for almost a year, before giving them up due to high food needs for a small tank.

I love dispars. Maybe not as spectacular as the Bartletts but if you prefer the more "wiggly" body and less pointed snout - they are great fish. Stay small like Bartlett's and get along well with others

I have a pair and they like to hang out in a small private school :)

I've never kept Anthias, but worked at an LFS that did. My favourites, hands down, are sunburst. I don't have pictures, but I did a Google image search and found lots; they're stunning, if I ever kept Anthias there's no question I'd want one of these guys over any other type.

for a single anthias, sunburst work really well. i second bartlett's for a trio...still, for the price and hardiness, a group of lyretails are hard to beat ;)

I believe sunburst can be kept in a group of 3 (1 male + 2 females) I know a male/female pair will work

Some say that they do hang out in large groups in deeper water, but in shallower water, where most divers would be observing them, they are seen mainly as 1-3 fish. The species is generally more plentiful in deeper waters and the speculation is that in shallower water they may have trouble locating each other to hang out in larger groups.

E-A-G-L-E-S - Do the Lyretails fight at all? I would be worried about having 1 male & 2 females, since they're supposed to be the most aggresive of the Anthias. I kinda like the Dispars too, just don't see thm often. Bartletts are also cool, just too much money. Thanks.

i just got 2 barletts and 1 male and 4 female lyretails today.
the barletts are amazing in person, now i know why they cost so much more. came right out into the open and ate within a few hours.
but i still love my sunbursts. they're so cute and the big one hangs upside down in a cave.

the only fighting is the male sometimes showing his dominance to the females....they never touch my chromis or two little ocellaris clowns, nothing
