When a tank breaks, why is it always at night?

Thankfully it's not my 150g reef, just the 21g FW tank in the bedroom, but dammit, I need a burst tank like I need flippers.

I was lying in bed watching TV and heard dripping. Saw that one corner of the tank had water dripping off it onto the floor, and the carpet was wet. I thought maybe it was water wicking down a cord, but the top, corner edges, sides, cords, everything but that one bottom corner was dry. Yep, damn thing sprung a leak right on the bottom. It's not a new tank, but it's only about 8 years old, maybe less, and it was pricey. It's a 'Euro-style' rimless tank, with a special light fixture designed to fit it, and it's a weird size with a stand that fits it perfectly. Unfortunately I can't just run to the nearest LFS to replace it, unless I want to get a new light fixture and have a stand that's a slightly different size.

So it's not the end of the world, the fish (a hodge-podge mix of FW fish, mostly chosen for or by my four year old son) are in a bucket with a small filter, heater and airstone, but... darn it, why do disasters always happen at nighttime?

I'm going to try to get to a fish store tomorrow to get a replacement tank. In the meantime, I'll try to get my blood pressure under control while I soak the water out of our carpet. Oh well, lucky for me one of my favourite parts of the hobby is decorating a new tank.

I heard that tanks study our sleeping habits so they know when it's best to break to tick us off even more than just a normal leak. Just think you could have been asleep and awoken by a loud boom instead of a trickle. That sucks brother. My buddy had the bottom of his 120 give out a few weeks ago. It literally fell off the tank. Maybe you can take this chance and get a bit bigger tank :)

They don't. My 210 split the front pane while I was at work. I was lucky enough to walk in when it still had about 100 gallons of water in it, which means I had another 100 gallons in my living room. It was fun.

The reef gods have access to our vacation calendars and installed room motion detectors.

Consider implementing a WaterBug sensor.
