First post on the forum love all the info that I have found so far. I have been looking for a place to buy a plain nano tank. All I can really find so far is kits. Where is the cheapest place to buy nano tanks
Thanks in advance

Welcome to Reef Central!

As far as a tank, what did you have in mind? You can setup a plain 10G tank fairly easy or you could go as far as some of the kits that sell almost every piece of equipment you would need.

A trip to an LFS to scope out whats available may be in order for you to narrow your decision from "a plain nano tank" to "a 5.5G All Glass Aquarium" or a "12G nanocube" or what-not.

i second what wareagle said...I personally dont like getting the all in one things like nano cubes, bio-cubes, all those...I like to actually pick and chose what filters, lights, tank shape that i want...all that. But then again, i like to experiment w/stuff, which is kinda how my nano is...2.5g with a pound of live rock from the lfs, and another 2 pounds from when i went snorkeling. I've also got a whisper 20 HOB filter on it that looks totaly huge for it lol, but its such little flow for that filter that imo, its perfect for a 2.5.
Lighting it is also a piece of cake, tho i've tried a few different things w/that too. But right now i've got a coralife mini pc bulb (the 50/50 one that screws into any regular lamp) but i plan to get the 20 watt one, cuz the 10 isnt really very bright...i'm sure its enough light to possibly grow what i got, but i cant really see it.

so what type of tank are you lookin for? One that can maybe hold a couple small fish (like a 10 or 12 gallon nano) or something like my 2.5 which isnt good for any fish, but just for corals and inverts...i plan on getting a mantis shrimp as soon as i can find one for free lol.

I am actually on the way to the LFS and see if they have any tank that are not kits.
My idea is to make a desk top nano with a sump and fuge in the bottom part of the desk. I am thinking that maybe a 10 would be to big for the desk top so somewhere in the 5-7 range with some coral and inverts is my current plan maybe even a mantis im not sure yet.

I will post again when i get back to see what I could find.

If you can find a suitable stand and a place for it, a 20G Long is a great choice for a reef as the width and depth of it paired with the height of it make for excellent parameters. The height lets you get away with less intensive light and the depth/width gives you the ability to stack rocks yet still have "beach" area for clams, etc and gives your animals more room to move about.

I own both a 10G SW and a 20GL FW and both are good tanks. There are 5.5G All glass aquariums that many people have modified here on Reef Central. I think they are just a smaller ratio 10G.

ya if you want a fish, the smallest i'd go is 5 gallons..you could have a shrimp goby and pistol shrimp pair...those are fun.

alright i was at the LFS today and it looks like 10 gallon AGA for 12.95 is best that i can find.

I have a couple questions now since we are already on the subject of equipment.

Would a 20 gallon sump be to big for this project I have the room for one and would really like to have as much water for my nano as possible?

What size of a tank would a pair of clownfish need to be in? (i have seen some places that say 30 and other people that have them in 10 gallons)

Thanks for the help thus far its shaping up to be a project that will keep me busy for a while.
