which lyretails would you get? owner chime in please :)

I have a group of the Indian Ocean ones, 1 male, 4 female (started as 5 female). They're really beautiful fish and very peaceful, more so than the Bartletts I have. I can't speak for the regular ones, but it appears from the DFS pics that the male is colored differently. You'll end up with one being male, so you just need to decide which you prefer.

Thanks a lot! I greatly appreciate it, I think I like the fiji males better with the purple colors but unfortuently they dont have one for sale on the site.

I am thinking about ordering 1 medium fiji female and 3 small female indian ocean females (since I like them better) and really hope the fiji female is a lot better.

We have a trio from the Indian Ocean. They were purchased as a female trio and one transitioned. They look just like the picture with the male having more purple on his eyes now. I cannot speak to the Fiji originating variety so I suppose I'm not much help, but I agree with Divingtheworld that they are very personable and active. I actually like the added orange in our tank too. All in all, excellent additions.

awesome, thanks!

just ordered 4 female indian ocean lyretails and one male Fiji lyretail, should be getting them tomorrow. I will update with pictures if anyone is interested

a note about the transition, it's one of the cooler things i've been privy to see in this hobby.

we got a trio of females and a male. unfortunately the male died shortly after being placed in to QT (it was sad, he came out sideways, hit the bottom, and that was about it).

so i ran the other 3 through my normal TTM regimen, once they were through and in the grow out system i purchased another male, ran him through TTM, and then in to grow out with the others.

the window of time the trio was without a male was maybe 3 weeks. maybe.

i held them in my grow out system for about 5 weeks, making sure everything was fine, then moved them to the big tank.

about two weeks after moving them to the DT, i noticed the alpha female was starting to change slightly in color, and develop a dorsal spike.

s/he has continued the progression, developing the fin spots, coloration, and markings of the male. while my existing male appears to have actually become less vibrant in his coloration.

so far everyone still seems to be getting along well. the tank is a 155 oceanic, so there's quite a lot of room for 4 anthias, but i was surprised at how fast and dramatic the change was. very cool thing to be able to witness a few inches from my face. unfortunately i wasn't able to get any good pictures of the transformation because of the constant motion the fish always seem to be in.

good luck with your trio, they're awesome fish!

i have had the same happen...ended with two males and several females, however after about 1 year the larger "newer" male is starting to kill the older male, sadly!!!

that is sad.

i'm assuming at some point there will be more aggression, but i'm sort of riding it out for the time being. they're tricky buggers to catch in a big tank.

they will give each other the occasional chase, the new male likes to herd the females and the old male in a similar manner some times.
