Which octopus skimmer for a 400- 450g system

I was looking at the 250 and 300 models. Which one would work best for me on a 400 - 450g total system. This will be on a SPS system.

I would think the 250 would be sufficient. I would also think that you could do fine with a pair of NW200s as well. How much of the system is "tank" and how much is sump/refugium?

unless it lightly stocked you will have to mesh mod ether skimmer IMO. i think the dnw 400 would be best.

i like the 250 better than the 300. it will be ok unmodded but modded it will rock

280g tank, 100g stock tank + 2 40 breeders. The stock tank will not be filled to the top, 80g or so.

Why do you like the 250 over the 300? 400 cost to much and this is why I didn't mention it.

If you plan to heavily stock your tank down the road, i would go with the 300. The two extra inches in the diameter will help a lot along with the three pumps.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but I wondered why Roland thought the 250 would be a better buy?

The neck size is the same on both skimmers(design flaw IMO). The neck size is the limiting factor as to how much air the skimmer will handle.

If the 300 had a bigger dia or length neck that would let it handle more air you could up the air to water ratio increasing the interface. since it dose not have a bigger neck the extra size can only contributes to more dwell time.

My goal with a skimmer is to get max Air to water interface. I don't place that much importance on dwell time. ( IMO dwell time use to play a very important roll in skimmers. when skimmers only ran 3-7 % air to water ratio. you really needed all the dwell you could get. now a days some skimmers have air to water ratio of 50/ 50 and higher BK and BM in the NW category. those kind of ratio ensures awesome interface.)

2. I like the pumps the 250 uses OTP 3000. The 300 uses OTP2000.
you can mod one 3000 pumps to pull 40 plus SCFH that more than Both stock, & more than all 3 of the 2000s stock.

Since the neck on ether skimmer can only really handle 30Scfh thier wont be much performance difference between the two. (if you intend to max out the air) so I say save some money Go 250.

The mesh mod or GG mod on the 250 is pretty easy to max out air and only use 1 pump.

ether skimmer stock, both pull about the same amount of air.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll go with the 250 as its only $500. I wanted the BM250 but $750 is just a little to much for me.
