Which ro/di unit to get?

I was looking to get either a 4 stage or 6 stage ro/di unit from BRS, I tested my water with a handheld meter I bought and it reads 74 tds. Is is worth it to get the 6 stage over the 4 stage? And since I have a handheld meter is it also worth it to get the inline TDS meter and pressure guage?

Thanks for any help,

Mike

4 stage, cheapest you can find since it's the membrane & DI resin that do most of the work & most units employ the same brands. I also us a hand held TDS meter, works fine, I usually test every week before I use it...one other helpful hint is to get a flush kit already installed, this will help prolong the membrane life a bit.

Thanks for all the advice! So I should look for one that has a flush kit? What about the water savers from BRC? The Filter Guys look like they have good units too!

I have Filter Guys's 5-stage with the flush kit and inline TDS meter. Wish I'd gotten the pressure valve also. Works like a charm. I accidentally drowned the TDS meter a while ago and it was an easy replacement part.

Oh sorry. You should definitely get the flush kit. At some point you'll be reading about equipment and start wishing you had one.

I do 10g water changes every week on my 75g tank, would the 75g per day unit be ok over the 150g per day? I know it depends on your water pressure but on the average how much water can you really make and does it really take a long time?

Always a lot of waste in a rodi unit. I think four gallons to one. But my water bill doesn't reflect it. I do two 15 gallon changes a month

You want at least 4 gal of waste to 1 gal of good water, this keeps the mebrane clean and will have it last longer. You can run the waste to good at less but you will be replaceing the membrane 2-3 times as much.

Is it worth spending extra money for the water saver units that are offered with some units?

TDS quantity dictates that.

With low TDS yes I do. 75 is acceptable and I would sure be trying.

I'm tempted to go triple because mine is so low [27] today

The one thing I really like about the BRS 6 stage is that you can ride your DI resin longer as you have 2 DI canisters. So before when I would swap out at like 70% used on the DI resini I can now ride it to 100% used as the second canister does the work as needed. I then swap positions and put in fresh media to the last DI chamber.

I do have the water saver as well as I wanted more production so I was not waiting as long. Not a huge deal that I would say one should pay more for but I like it producing faster since it has less waste. Technically allows me to burn through the other filters slower as well as I have less waste water to make the same amount of clean water.

Not sure how much water you have to produce, but the BRS 4 stage value water saver plus 150 GPD is a great system. I've had it for 9 months now and it's awesome. I have it 30' from an outside hose bib with no booster pump and it fills my two 25 gallon water storage containers in a half a day. You can't beat bulkreefsupply.com..
