Which RO Unite to get.....

Ok i have decided to get an RO unite for my 29 gallon Seahorse tank. I have a hair algea problem, and Im hoping this will cure it. A while back, I convinced my mom to buy one from costco, but she wouldnt let me assemble it because it was "too big and confusing".... Any ways, i am getting one now.
I am looking for one that will get rid of phosphates. Does this mean I have to get an RO/DI system? I have a budget of arround 150 -180 bucks. Also I am concerned about water leakign.... The reason I liked the one at costco was because it came with a 3 gallon storage tank that automatically shut off the RO system when it was full. It did not however, come with a DI system. I think i might want to get it again. here is a link to it : http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10040488&whse=&topnav=&browse=&s=1

If I were to buy this one would it solve my phosphate / hair algea problem?

Do you recomend any others?

you can get an ro/di unit for less on ebay. You don't need a big one, you only have a 29 gal tank. I have a 36 gpd ro/di unit that just taps into a water source. Key is to make sure you turn it off when you are done making water. I placed mine in the garage, just in case.

YOu want to get rid of HA.

Why don't you try some of the Phos Gaurd, or Phos Ban. That will cost you around $10.

You could shorten your photoperiod.

Increase your flow.

Increase the amount of 02 in the system.

Add some hermits.

Remove direct sunlight. Get a better filter.

Buy a UV.

Get a seahare, or a letuce nudibranch.

Add a skimmer.

Buy RO water from the store.

Do more WC's. Shame your not close there is free research grade Salt Water in Newport. I'm gettting like 50g a week.

Remove the most infected pieces of rock with HA and place in a seperate tub with a powerhead and no light for a week at a time, you can feed the tub a cube of mysis everyother day to keep the bacteria alive.

Check your nitrates and control the problem. DIY Nitrated filters are like $20 including the media.

Any of these things would help, I don't think you should or could succsessfully do all of them.

Pardon the small hi-jack...

Kevin,

I've been following the thread over on So Cal Reefers on the NB water, and wondered if you had run some tests on the water. Is it working out okay for your seahorses?

Ive done virtulaly all of those things lol i have burnt my rock and re cured it( i just put it back in the aquarium today XD) I buy disstilled water from the grocery because non of my LFS' Sell RO/DI water.I have UV, I use phosphate remover pads, and i have a short 8 hour light period.... I had hermits, but they ate eachother, and I got a seahare and a lettuce nuidibranc, but both died.... I recently upgraded my skimmer to an AquaC Remora, and I have a refugium w/ 24 hour light and macros.... Am I missing anything? lol I think she will let me get An RO if I get one with a faucet Adapter

well, let's start from the beginning.
1. Hair algae is usually caused by nitrates (over feeding, little water changes, etc). it can be caused by phosphates but cyano would be the main algae problem, not hair algae.
2. RO alone will take out phosphates, the RO/DI will take out everything. check out www.airwaterice.com or (there was one more i just don't remember the name)
3. you are NOT suppose to use distilled water, you are suppose to use RO water, it is the same as drinking water from the store... just watch out for manufactors because some add flavor/taste. DO NOT BUY FROM SUPERMARKET WATER VENDING MACHINES, they rarely change their cartiridge.
3. Have you checked your nitrates, if so, what kit are you using and how high are they?
4. have you checked your phosphates? if so, with what kit? could it be possible it is not a phosphate issue?
5. if it is phosphate, which phosphate pads are you using, are they the white ones, if so, they don't work well...
6. hermit crabs will kill eachother... try smaller blue legs or turbo snails. you can also try saltwater mollies.

I would not be surprised at all if nitrates read zero. With all that algae I think it is likely. JMO.

Do you have any corals?

I also have a small Acropora frag that im not sure is alive or not... it has bright colors, but it might just be coraline that is growing on it lol
