Which Seio

I have a 110 gallon that is six feet long.
Which Seio should I go with, how many, and placed where?

Thanks

Hi Ironman,

Thank you for your inquiry. There are a lot of different factors that will effect how many and where to place the units.

For example, what type of corals are you planning on keeping? An SPS dominated aquarium will require more flow than an LPS dominated tank.

Will the Seio's be your only source of water flow, or do you have a return pump also providing flow?

For your size aquarium, I would recommend two to three pumps to aid in flow for the tank. If your tank is an SPS dominated aquarium (or will be), I would suggest the M1100 or M1500's for your tank. If your tank is going to be more LPS's and softies, then the M820's would be good choices. You also do not have to go all with the same size powerheads. You can mix up the pumps to create different "strengths" of currents in different areas of the aquarium.

Placement of the powerheads will depend somewhat on placement of corals and rocks. You are generally trying to get good flow over the corals and rocks, while also trying to eliminate any dead spots where detritus would accumulate. Many people will put one powerhead on each side of the tank and position the third to cover any areas the other pumps (and return pumps) are not moving water. This may be on one of the sides or on the back of the tank. You may have to try a few different placements of the powerheads to see what gets your tank the best possible movement for its inhabitants.

Hopefully this will help out with your decision. If you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks for all that information Keith,

The main types of corals that are currently in my tank are lps, however I do plan on acquiring some sps in the near future. My goal would be to have a nice ensemble of sps and lps thriving within one community.

I currently have two Maxi Jet 1200 and two Hagen 402, my Rio 2100 just died on me. My return is a Rio 1700 HF giving my about 600 gallons at 5 feet. I could keep the Maxi's and position them in areas of poor water movement.

I hope this helps in determining my needs.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply. If you are going to keep the Maxi Jets in the tank, then I would suggest two of the M1100 or two of the M1500. If you would like to get rid of the Maxi Jets, you could substitute them for maybe a single M820. This would give you good flow through out the aquarium, again this will depend also on rock and coral placement.

You may also consider using three different size pumps, maybe an M1500, M1100 and an M820 so you can have different flow rates in different areas of the tank.

There are also many ways of mounting the Seio pumps also, and I have found you tend to get the maximum flow out of the units when you have them set up with the water flowing straight out of the units, instead of "bending" out of the unit. Although this configuration does take up a little more room, you will usually see higher flow rates.

If there is anything else we can do for you do not hesitate to ask.
