White balance correction on Canon DSLRs

Does anyone use the white balance correction when taking tank photos using Canon DSLRs? Please note this is different from setting a custom white balance. In the white balance correction you select values to correct the color temperature.

If you use this, what values do you like? I haven't had time to play with mine yet, but am wondering how well the correction values will work with the 20K MHs...in theory it should be a great tool!

I'll play around and hopefully post some pics this weekend. Feel free to tag along...

I just shot in RAW with the WB set to auto. I do my color correction in RAW processing and photoshop.

PS When setting the WB to color temp, it only goes to 10,000 kelvin.
I saw that with the color temp, obviously this setting was not designed by a reefer.

I have never shot RAW before, sounds like it's time to experiment. Luckily the camera will shoot both RAW and JPG concurrently, so I can experiment without getting entirely out of my element.

My Rebel XT shoots both RAW+jpeg, so yours should. What body are you using? The Rebel XT doesn't have a selectable Kelvin, I think you have to get to the 20D+ for that. But it's always great to see how the original jpeg vs. processed RAW turns out, it's such a huge difference.

I can't wait to try the RAW+JPEG this wknd. I have the 30D, great piece of equipment, but I've never spent a lot of time on tank photography. Since I just got my digital SLR and I'm more familiar with film, I need to learn how to Photoshop the RAW image. I'm used to scanning 35mm negs and using the resultant JPEGs for curves, levels, etc.

Thanks for the info, I'm all over it.

I've made a few threads about post-processing and how to do some neat tricks with CS2, mostly about color correction. Shooting in RAW is a must though, I'll see if I can dig through my photos and find some before and after images.

Thanks a lot Blazer. If you can track down some of those threads without too much difficulty I would greatly appreciate it. I am well versed in Photoshop image correction, but I've never used RAW.

Ah, I see. The threads I've posted included PS work and nothing really about how to process the RAW. There are many programs that can handle the RAW file, CS2 being one of them, but I use a product called DxO Optics Pro. I didn't write up anything about that program since I figured no one else would be using it. Now start posting up some pictures!
