"white" red buggs?

I have posted this in SPS and LPS but maybe someone in MTRC will have a clue. ANd also to let people know who have gotten frogspawn from me in the past to look for this. I haven't added anything to the tank since the swap in January so whatever it is is slow to get to plauge proportions....If it even came in from there, who knows how long it has been in the tank.

"White" red bug infestation??
I noticed one of my frogspawns not extending and receeding at the base. Upon close inspection it seems to be infested with very, very tiny white bugs. They would remind you of tiny mites and crawl around pretty fast. They are sucking the life out of the frogspawn. No they are not tiny pods or any other normal tank fauna. I am only seeing them on the bases of my frogspawns but the other 3 colonies are not as affected yet. My SPS ( I lost a few SPS fraggs from a temp spike recently), other LPS, clams and softies are all fine.

I did a dip last night with the only thing I had on hand, Seachems coral disinfectant which is basically a iodine dip at 2x concentration for 10 mins. I got about 20 of those little stars that are in debate over being bad, good or indifferent but the water was saturated witht he tint white bugs. It looked like a dust storm, they are that tiny. I noticed when I put the coral back in the tank it had only killed about 85% of them. Some were still scurrying about like noting ever happened.

Has anyone ever heard of this type of bug and what can be done to erradicate it? I am hopping for a compleat tank treatment like interceptor because pulling every coral from a 280 for dipps is not very fun sounding A pic would almost be impossiable with my camera through very thick glass. My micro isn't the best and they are so small and white. Thanks in advance for any help!!

Angela, I have no idea what they are, but interceptor may be worth a try. It decimates some of the pod population but otherwise I think is fairly benign on everything else (except the red bugs). The problem will come in if these white guys lay eggs. Interceptor works so well on red bugs in part because they are live bearers.

I must give big thanks to "geekdafied" if you all remember him being permabanned awhile back. He contacted me via email (we had talked in emails before so he was not breaking RC policy) to let me know red buggs can come in different colors and will in fact get on other corals. I went down to investigate real close this time and sure enouph, red buggs everywhere on 2 of my SPS fraggs!!! I would have never looked "that" hard as all but 1 in the far back is thriving. It has great color, just not extending polyps for awhile. I have one up front close to the glass and if you look real hard there they are. It has colored up 100% since the swap so I would have never thought it was affected since it was looking better! Exact same tiny bug, same movement pattern, just red on the acro. I tried some pics but with that real thick glass and most fraggs being very far back nothing would show up. But without a doubt, the buggs are identical to things I have seen on-line. SO off to the vet for some interceptor :( This may be why I lost almost all my SPS fraggs from the swap, not the temp spike or alk swing I had but I am sure they just helped put a already stressed coral over the edge if they were infested. I also have TONS of spaggetti worms, pods, crabbs and all. Tons of pepermints, 2 cleaners, a fire shrimp and coral banded shrimp. I sure hope they all make it. Wonder if I will have a ammonia spike?

So, I have no clue when I got them, I would say from the swap. I put everyone in QT for about 10 days and dipped with stuff that does not affect red buggs so it was my fault for not getting some interceptor and doing the QT/dip 100% fool proof. Just looking real close didn't cut it this time. I felt "safe" as the only SPS fraggs I got were from very reputable tanks (I know no guarentee) but I did go grab at the very end 3 for $10 mystery acro fraggs. Would be my luck, loose about $75 worth of nice fraggs for a $3.25 fragg on a impulse buy from someone I did not know.... Now to track down who all has fraggs from me since the swap :(.
