I have this white sponge that is slowly creeping up on some of my corals. Most people say "ah sponges are good b/c they're filters". Well maybe, but this one is starting to encrust one of my gonipora enough where it refuses to come out (the one in the background in the pic below). I pulled the goni out yesterday and the entire bottom was covered in thick sponge, so I relocated it.
(As a side note, the walls of the overflow are quickly becoming covered with this same sponge.)
Is manually removing the sponge around the coral and on the rock the only way?
