Why does coralline grow so much faster on powerheads....?

Thanks for the information! I need to do this soon! Tank has been up for 6 months now, and have not yet cleaned them. Have plenty of Coraline on them though :)

I'm in the rough surfaces band wagon it also grows much better on reef ready overflows that are not electric or magnetic.

CLR idk if its reef safe...vinegar however is...i still vote vinegar and just leave them in overnight 100% vinegar and the next day wipe them clean and back in tank

Regarding cleaning power heads in Vinegar, can someone give me specific instructions on how they do this? I.E. Vinegar/water ratio, what they do before putting power head back in tank, etc. Thx!

my vinegar to water ratio is usually 1 part vinegar to however many parts water i need to cover the item i'm soaking without having to run to the store to buy more vinegar because i forgot to get extra. :smokin:

I wouldn't use CLR, however muriatic acid works extremely quickly and I've never had a problem using it after a quick rinse.

i think it's best practice to never use anything unless you know exactly what's in it. from our food, and living, to our aquatic charges.

vinegar, muriatic, will do just as good a job as any 'brand' cleaner, always cheaper, and you know exactly what risks there may be-no/fewer unknowns :)

+1 to muriatic acid. Be careful and always add the acid to water and not the other way around or it could flash.

I would have to soak everything in vinegar overnight to get it clean versus 10 minutes in muriatic acid. I used about a cup mixed in a gallon of water and could have used less. It was bubbling like crazy.

After everything was stripped i just rinsed all objects in a bath of baking soda and water to neutralize everything before placing it back into the DT.

Half water and half vinegar is what I use to soak overnight and then clean and rinse. I also use a toothbrush to get the hard to reach areas. You can also scrap the coralline off the power head and spread it over your rock to help spread it faster....

It is the plastic, it is a rougher surface, and easier for it to grow on. If it had anything to do with heat or magnetic fields, what would explain it growing so well on overflow plastic?

it not being a factor someplace else does not mean it can't be a factor elsewhere.

if i claim certain shoes can make me jump higher, and someone else doesn't need those shoes to jump. it doesn't mean that the shoes don't help *me* jump.

i'll still stand by my theory that one of the reasons for seemingly faster development on power heads themselves is helped by the induction field around the powerhead.

the question you should be asking is will it grow even faster at the overflow if an electromagnetic field is applied. ;)

yep, my diy frag racks grow coralline fast as well... as well as plastic return pipes, etc... it has a better surface to cling to..

higher Oxygen .... from extra flow. that is my opinion.

the electromagnetic field, would sure have an effect.

why do so many things grow inside and around the skimmer ?
