Why so many names?

Why does a 72x24x30 tank go by so many different names??

Most commonly its called a 220g, but also seen the same dimension tanks on here called 220g, 215g, 210g,,,but if you put in those dimensions on ReefCentrals calculator here is comes out to 224.4 gallons...

Again why are there so many names for this 72x24x30 tank???

not a standard size?????? every pet shop i ever been in that sells tanks, always lists 72x24x30 as a 220g... they are made by marineland, how is that not a standard size tank?

Who quotes INSIDE measurements when talking about tank size?

There can be different 'names' for a tank size, but in reality none of them usually refer to the actual water volume that the tank will hold, which is even less, once LR and sand displacement is figured in.
IMO, it's a good idea to calculate the actual water volume of a tank and sump, (which will be a good deal less than what most people think it is) especially when dosing meds/additives.

first part, i thought the same thing about who thinks of it as the inside dimensions....

now for the second part.. ummm what? lol the post was about a particular tank (72x24x30) being called different names. a sump has absolutely nothing to do with this post. and meds? lmaoooooo....

again. this isnt about actual gallons of the tank, its the multiple names of the same sized dimension tank....and the manufactures rate the tank on gallons if completely full, not if you put rock in, sand in, lil boat in, or a bowling pin in there lmao....

Absolutely wrong!...names (sizes) are based on outside dimensions, usually rounded up to the next 1-5g ... the tank 'completely full' with NOTHING else in the tank displacing water, does not hold anywhere near what the 'name' implies, especially on larger tanks.

wow your tryin to go the the most minute detail huh.....smh

when i said full. that meant the tank is rated to hold "this" much water....have a nice day....
 
This thread made me giggle. My 40b probably holds 30.764 gallons because of my LR and sand and my 29gallon sump probably holds 2.346 gallons.. Woo for a 33 gallon system! -__-
 
Aqueon lists a 210 as 72.5" x 24.5" x 29.7". Which is roughly 228 gallons. Of course we need to eliminate the glass, so 222 gallons. That includes the tank trim so, 72" x 24" x 28" gives us roughly 210. Assuming we fill the thing to the highest level possible, which we won't, so we could also call it a 200 gallon (but no one will be that silly...).

Realistically speaking it's a 200 gallon but one could call it a 210, 215, 220, 225 depending on how they measure the thing.
 
Plus let's be honest we are going by full framed tanks. The framing adds a little and you don't use the top 2" or so.. So that will change the water volume too

AGAIN lol .im ONLY talking about how the tank measures 72x24x30 is called like Khemul said a 210, 215, 220, 225
 
Okay let me try to shed some light on this mad Max,if you go into an aquarium store nine times out of 10 anyone of those tanks would be measured 72 x 24 x 29 or 30 but yet they could each be labeled differently as a 210 215 220 . In reality all of these tanks actually do exist and they are all different sizes they only vary by a half inch either way for instance a perfeco 220 gallon tank is 72.5 x 24.5 x 31. Whereas a 210 gallon perfecto tank is 72.5 x 24.5 x 29.5/8 that small difference over a large tank creates 10 gallon more water volume most LFS aren't going to go into detail that far on their dimensions on the sticker so in reality it's not one tank being labeled different sizes it's actually different size tanks being labeled with the same dimensions but if you measure them they will be off a half-inch to three-quarter inch length and height
