will an iceprobe fit in the pump chamber in the 24g aqua pod?

I don't think a iceprobe is going to work for you.... take a look at the IAC chiller nanocustoms sells... it the same thing really but modifiedto bork in a hooded bersion of the 'pod or cube.

btw... I think setting up a "fuge" in the rear chambers is a total waste that will probably only make any heat issues you have worse to boot.

icenine2005,

I respectfully disagree; there a several people that have it installed in nanocubes from the 6 to the 24 gallon. The iceprobe has many times the cooling power of the ICA chiller that nanocustoms sells. The ICA provides around 18 watts of cooling and the Iceprobe provides around 50 watts. While the Iceprobe is more difficult to install (requires drilling the back glass) it may be the better option since the poster has MH lighting. I understand the ICA is intended to offset the heat from adding additional PC lights, but IMHO wonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t cut it with the heat a MH light generates. When I ordered my modded cube from nanocustoms, I requested the ICA installed. I ended up removing it as my tank temps very rarely top 80 degrees and it was just an unnecessary piece of equipment. I did notice that I could lower the temp by a good 2 degrees with the ICA hooked up to a microjet 450.

icenine2005, you may have a point however, it would be difficult to install an Iceprobe if the tank is already setup and running. If its not setup yet, then the Iceprobe would be my choice. I did see one over on nano-reef.com, installed in a HOB refuge that was very ingenious and quite nicely done.

As far as the refuge is concerned, it seems that MOST, but not all, the successful long term nano reefers are using them. I have one in my 12 gallon nonocube and my nitrates have dropped from a low 5 to 6ppm to almost undetectable levels since I have gone with a cheato/refug. I have not had any heat increases buy adding a refuge and the associated lighting.

The short answer to this long post, the consensus is too expect a 2-3 degree drop using an ICA, the Iceprobe should easily maintain whatever temp you need in a 24 gallon tank. Just depends on how much cooling the poster needs. I would just call nanocustoms and say, "this is what I have and this is what I want to accomplish", what do you suggest. They are the experts ....I definitely am not.

My Tank Specs:

JBJ 12DX w/ Nanocustoms 4.24 mod, R2 Moon Light
Refuge Mod w/ shoot thru the glass 18 watt PC
MJ 900 w/Hydro-Flo and MJ 606

1 ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Green Clown Goby
2 - Scarlett Hermits
3 - Asterea Snails
3 - Nassarius Snails
2 ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Ceirth Snails

...yeah... got link to the cubes and aquapods the iceprobe is installed on?
...and those chamber fuges are pointless, sorry. Try water changes instead.

why do you think the refuge is a waste, I was going to use a palm light and cheato. I don't understand why it would not work, as long as the cheato is continously trimmed so it can continously grow.

also, I dont have temp issues atm, I am worried about summer

I see your posts over on the nano-reef. very nice tank by the way. I have used your aquascape as a model for my tank. Thanks for posting your progress shots.

interesting post dated feb 15 2005 and I quote" The third compartment is goinng to be set up as the fuge. The fuge is intended mostly for nitrate reduction but I'll be seeding it with critters as well. There will be live rock rubble and chaeto macro algae in the fuge. The output from the skimmer feeds over to the fuge and the fuge sits over a second Rio 800 pump that feeds back into the display"

you have changed your mind . BUT>>>you must be doing something right....tank looks fantastic. I like my fuge...it works for me, what else would I do with that space...more rocks? 100 ways to skin a cat.

:) who are you talking about willis!

I do have a few posts an nanoreef.com, but that is not me.

my tank just finished finished cycling a couple of days ago and I just began aquascaping.

whoops....that was addressed to icenine. I didnt make it clear. Check it out over nano-reef, worth the search.

Thanks for the compliments, keep reading the thread I ditched the fuge.
The "chamber fuge" does very little to reduce nitrates. If fact, unless they are well maintained they can add to the problem. The chamber fuges are tiny, lack flow in most cases and add no water volume to your system, in fact they detract from it. Not to mention, you really don't have enough material (macro, live rock or sand) for any signifigant amount of bio-filtration anyway, it's just too small back there. While they are popular, they are not doing what a lot of people think they are. Water changes and skimming are much better solutions for nutrient removal in a nano.
My rear chambers hold pumps, heaters, carbon and some bio-bale instead of live rock...and like I said I gave up on growing macro in rear chambers a while ago. The bio-bale adds surface area for bactieria, its compact and easy to remove and clean.

I am not sure what bio-bale is??? but it sounds like a potential nitrate factory.

can you please explain bio-bale?

It's a bacteria hosting media, looks a bit like some sort of packing material. ..I find it to be less cumbersome than a bag of rubble.
.....any filter media is a potential nitrate factory if you don't keep it clean.

and you actually keep it clean?
I know that I would never keep it clean, so all sponges and anything else that could become a nitrate factory are removed

The IceProbe's performance is decent if you get it for cheap off Ebay like I did (approx USD$40). If you are going to pay the full RRP, then I really don't feel it's worth that much. If I was paying full retail, I would have gone with the smallest AquaMedic Titan.

I plumbed my IceProbe into the top of an AquaClear 70 HOB filter and did the wiring for it mself. Keep in that mind peltier elements will only cool as much as the amount of heat you are able to remove from the hot side. This is why the ICA isn't very effective. The IceProbe has a big fan for its large heatsink and even that it isn't a magic heat cure. I'll post photos if you wish to see it, but I suspect people here have seen it enough! :D
