i have a 46reef and a 120 fowlr.am going to be moving soon(not really looking forward to it).i will have a full basement in the new house,so im going to upgrade my fowlr tank.im still undecided on the size but it will be in the 500 range (96x36x30) with a 300 gallon sump.now my question is,should i tie my 46 reef into this system once it is up or should i keep it contained into one.it seems to me that the larger volume would help with stability, only concern i have is the water from the fish only tank.should i be worried about that ?

I'd say leave them separate as long as the 46 reef is doing all right the way it is there's no reason to mess with it.
Plus, with setting up the larger FOWLR you're most likely going to be adding more rock and will have some sort of new tank/rock cycle thing to contend with.
Just my.02, I only have a 120 and am going to be setting up a 90 or so FOWLR and I wouldn't put my reef and my FOWLR on the same sump system just in case.

46bfinGA, Who is making your tank ? I havn't nailed down who is making my tank yet. I want a 96 x 36 x 36 My wife made me buy her new furniture before I got my tank , so now I am having to shop around for the best deal, since I had an added expense:(

I would definitely separate the systems. Reef tanks run on cleaner water than FOWLR, the large added volume would be tough to keep clean enough for a reef tank.

Also, why such a large sump? Remember, the more water volume, the more evaporation, the more saltmix, the more water change volume needed to affect a change, more RODI expense, etc, etc.

As for tank manufacturers, Goldleaf, feel free to start a thread about that in the Vendor's Experience Forum.
