Will Cyano algae kill SPS?

The cyano can if it covers your coral. Cyano is usually a sign of high nutrients (po4 and or nitrates) which will also brown sps and possibly kill them if params are high enough ime. According to a lot of people and research people can also experiHence Cyano if the red field ratio between phosphates and nitrates are not in ballance(please Google this if you are curious).

Fwiw, I had a bought with Cyrano when I began carbon dosing and once I got the ratio balanced out everything was fine. My sps did fine during this time.

It won't grow on living things IME. However, what causes the cyano can kill the coral.

If you have just a little, then I would not sweat it. I have had a little patch (half dollar sized) every now and then and everything is thriving. If you have a ton, then you might need to do something.

Yea what he said. Also understand that cyano can be very local. IE if you have a large system cyano may find nutrient levels conductive to growth in one place while conditions for growth may be unsuitable in other places. The big thing to remember is cyano doesn't grow on living things so it may be a very positive thing to see a bloom. For instance I have a remote sump with a large new sand bed. About 2 weeks after bringing the sump on line I saw some nice algae growth on the new sand. After another couple of weeks the algae began to die as the nutrients in the new sand bed were reduced due to the nutrient reduction caused by the algae growth. As the algae dies it is replaced with cyano growing on the dead algae. In another couple of weeks the cyano will also die off as they reduce the dead algae.
