Will I need a new protein skimmer?

I am setting up a new 65gal rr tank. I have a 40 gal breeder as my sump. Right now I have a euroreef rs 80 on my 55 and will be moving it over to the 65. I would like to have an sps dominate tank. My question is will I need to get a larger skimmer once the bioload gets heavier or will the rs 80 be able to handle it. I was looking at the bubble master 200. Kinda pricey though. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

I think you would be good, its rated to 80 gallons realistic 200 gallons for the inflated number that other companies use

So even though my total water volume will be around 95 gallons I would still be good with this skimmer? As it is right now I have to empty the skimmer cup about every two days. I do skim wet but would rather only have to empty twice a week. I dont mind having to empty it everyday but would rather not if I dont have to.

I have owned and used several different ER models in the past. With SPS, I would go with the RS135 instead and go slightly bigger. If you had a fish only tank, then the RS80 would be fine.

Reef Sponger- So you have had a rs135? What sizr tank did you have it on? I was thinking about staying with a euroreef if I did upgrade. I have not had a single problem with mine. Is there a way to make a drainline for the collection cup?

Str8clownr- When I do upgrade I will end up selling the rs80. I am not sure when this will be as I still have other stuff to buy first. If you dont mind waiting a month or two then I will keep ya in mind.

Thanks for the replies. I am still up in the air on the skimmer I would purchase. Does anyone else have any recommendations?

No, I don't own the exact model RS135. For myself, I am almost ready to pull the trigger on an H&S skimmer. But for your situation, I've used a similar size model to RS80 in the past and it is not enough for what you are planning. The RS135 is a better size for a SPS dominated tank. With SPS, you always want to go a little bit more. As you mentioned, your total water volume is already 95g, step up a little.

If you want to follow suit with what I've been researching, a perfect skimmer for your setup would be a H&S 150, like this used one:

what about a RS135 on a 90? SPS on top with a mix of bubble underneth, will this be enough? What if I eventually went to a sps dominated, will the rs135 be enough on the 90??

PS Sorry for highjacking your thread Jesse. Whats up man?

Yes, in my book it's enough. If you switch to SPS dominated tank, you'll just have to see how the corals behave. The next skimmer size up is RS180 and that's too big, so by default, the RS135 should work well.

So if I did go with the 135 I will be okay with a mixed and maybe so if I go sps dominated? Thanks for your advice reef sponger

Reef sponger- I have seen people mention an H&S skimmer but have never seen one. Is this a reputable company like euroreef is? I am looking to spend between 300-600. I have about 24 inches of room. 27 total inches but would think if I need to take the cup off and it doesnt have a release like the eurolock i am not sure how this would work. Does the H&S have a release similar to the eurolock? Thanks for all the advice.

Chris-Jacksonville is just as far of a drive as tampa is. When you coming back in town? I still need to send you some pics. I got most of the stand done now and the lights installed. I went with 1 400 watt and 1 250 watt. Did you decide on your lights? Are you really going t5?

Yes I think I am going with t-5s. I am going to be back in town for April 13th weekend. Yeah, where are the pictures?? This is the simple step that people love to show off, are you getting lazy on me?

Why in the world are you going with a 400 and 250, dont you think there will be an obvious difference in light rays, or are you trying to accomplish this? What kelvin bulbs are you using? Are you going to have to run a chiller? I wont and I will have just as much kick as your power grubbing halides.

Yes I will be running a chiller. I tried the t5's on my 55 gallona and did not like the results. My corals all lost color and when I tried sps they would last a little while then loose color and die. I am going for a diferent look. I want to have a shallow look and a deep look. I might upgrade the other side to a 400 as well. I knwo it is over kill but I found a sale on 400 watters at bioreef and got one to start. I also bought two lumenarc mini reflectors. It looks sweet even without water in it. I will be around next weekend and would love to meet up with ya. Let me know.

I was using a teklight t5 system with 4 54 watt bulbs. I am not going to be using them for actinics because the hood and tank are only 36" in length and the fixture is 48". I was thinking about evetually setting up a zoo frag tank and just changing out some bulbs. I also did not like the fact there is NO shimmer. It just doesnt seem like real light.

I have been looking at several skimmers and am not sure which one I like the most for the new tank.

ATI BM 200, EuroReef rs135 or the H&S 150. I like the look of all the skimmers. They all will fit in my sump. Price wise The H&S and BM are in the same ball park. Also The BM and H&S will handle a way bigger tank than what I will be setting up so I could add another frag tank to the miz later on and not have to worry about buying another skimmer then.

So the question is if you had a choice between the two which would you choose? Any feedback is appreciated.

For those asking about H&S, it is a very nice skimmer. I have the A150. Even tho it's external, it still sits in my sump. If you go with the A150, I would highly suggest connecting it directly to your drain line.
