I just recently bought a clam about a month ago it was doing very well color fully open etc.I just recently bought some Phosphate sponge .I put a small bag in a high flow area in my sump and noticed the clam is open but not as much as it was before .Could this be the problem. And if so will he recover.
Thanks
Paul

what brand of sponge??

are you running any carbon?

can you post a pic of the clam?

what are you dosing and how?

Its Kents Phosphate sponge.
I just dose Calcium and Alk from Bulk Reef supply.
My Calcium is 410 and My Alk is 9.5dkh.
I am not running carbon other than 3 bags of Chemi Pure.I have a phosphate reactor also that has ben running HGFO from bulk reef supply .I change every three months.Nitrates are running around 5ppm.

there can be issues under certain circumstances using a GFO but without a pic it is pretty tough tell. if you are worried, remove the GFO and chemi pure ( both contain iron ( Fe ) ) and run carbon in its place, then try to get a pic when you can.

Is a Kent Phosphate Sponge using GFO? Or is it aluminum based?

I know some of the Kent products are, well, pedestrian at best.

I am using Kent Phosphate sponge in a bag.I running GFO from bulk reef supply in a reactor. The only thing I changed recently was the using Kent Sponge in a bag.I also just noticed my clam shooting out some black gunk from its tube and it kept closing and expelling stuff.

i believe the kent phosphate sponge is a ceramic material, its the chemi pure ( elite ) and GFO that contain iron ( Fe ).

if the gunk is black it could just be waste, if it's brown it's the clams zooxanthellae which is a much worse sign.

Here are my pics

he looks ok to me, a little ruffled around the edges but not bad other wise. is he close to any corals ( softies ) or anything else that may bother him? if you continue to use the GFO and his mantle edges get more "ruffled" or even fold over on itself, let us know.

I don't know what happend my clam died today.I can't beleive it.He looked good yesterday. He is gone the insides looked like they were eaten.

sorry for your loss, this is unfortunately how they go. looking fine one day and the CUC is doing their job the next.
