Worlds Smallest Flower Pot? ***Pix***

Story #1

Well, about 4 or 5 days ago I purchased the smallest Flower Pot coral, I'd ever seen. closed, it was about the size of a jelly bean. I had to take pix of it because I was amazed how small it was. As soon as I saw it, I HAD TO HAVE IT!!! I immediately named it "Nano Bean" since it's the size of a Jelly Bean. Took it home, acclimated it and not one bare spot, knock on wood, it's doing well, not bad for $5. Having a Nano Cube 12DX, you basically snatch up anything if it's tiny. This little guy fit the bill perfectly. So here's pix of my little Nano Bean.

Pic #1: It's kind of hard to see since it's closed, but it's between two hermits, let me tell ya, these aren't very large hermits, infact the hermit to the right is tiny!

Pic #2: Here you can see it's fully opened up and is in the forground of the pic with my Neon yellow clown goby in the backround

Pic #3: This pic is a shot of the entire thing tank from the front to give a better idea of the proportions.

I hope you enjoyed Story #1 along with the pix, now for story #2.

Story #2

The last few days, I've been really excited about my new little "Nano Bean" as I'd never seen a Flower Pot coral even remotely as small as this one, and jokingly been telling myself that I had the "worlds smallest Flower Pot coral". Today, I decided to go to a fish store that I only go to on occasion, since it's not as close as a few others that I frequent. I had nothing to do today as I had the day off work, so I thought I'd pay them a visit since I've gotten some of my favorite corals from there. I went up and down the rows of fish and looked intently on the always beautiful selection of corals when something caught my eye in one of what I call their "scrap" tanks. The "scrap" tanks, are a few tanks where they keep some of their snails, or Zoanthid polyps that either broke loose from the colonies or rocks. Since I have such a small aquarium, I often buy several of these loose Zoo's and then superglue gel them onto a rock to form a new little colony. Anyway, when I was looking through the "scrap" tank, I saw many zoo's which I picked out, then I saw something that I at first thought was a Zoo, then I realized wow, another tiny Flower Pot. I was excited and once again HAD TO HAVE IT!!! Right away I knew it was smaller than my Nano Bean, but didn't think it was much smaller....until I got it home. When I took it out of the bag, in relation to Nano Bean, it was so small that I just couldn't believe it. I quickly put a dime on the table and set what I've now dubbed "Pico Bean" next to it. As you can tell Pico Bean is about the size of a Lentyl bean. It has several polyps and looks to be in wonderful shape, I just finished acclimating it and attatched it to a rock near Nano Bean. It hasn't extended yet in my tank, but it was fully extended in the store, so I know it's a nice little piece. So now, I'm convinced I have the "World's Smallest Flower Pot coral" If you don't think so, proove me wrong  Here's a pic of Pico Bean, I'll take more once the new little guy fully extends, one of his arms started to extend until one of my hermits scared it back into his home.

:D ....I guess that means I use to have the "World's Smallest Flower Pot coral", but it's 7 1/2 months old now. I have another that started out a tiny bit larger. The one in the pic, I glued to a rock and its growth is severely stunted compared to the other, which I built a baby pen for.

All the details are here http://www.goniopora.org/
Check the Reproduction section, the Baby Pen tutorial, the Photo Gallery, and the Feeding section.

That was a nice little find for $5! Nano Bean and Pico Bean...those are good names. I just named a new clownfish "Nano" because he was so small (placed in a non-goniopora tank).

EDIT: Also, check my gallery here on RC for pics of them eating.....I forgot they were there.

Let them grow on there until they fall off.

John, thanks for posting that! I learned a lot about Goni's by going to your site. I've always known they're tough and don't have a very long life cycle, but now I hopefully can keep them around and better care for them. Your site is very informative, thank you. Oh and I now bow down, that two polyped Goni, definitely beats mine, I guess my call to Guiness should be put on hold until I find a single polyped Goni...it shall be dubbed "Atto Bean" Thanks again for all the info.

Your welcome.

It will be interesting to see how well Nano Bean grows while glued to the rock. Keep us updated. I imagine mine would grow better if it wasn't glued to such a small rock and sitting on the sand bed. It has really taken a beating (from crabs and snails dragging their shells over it).

I had a single polyp from a polyp bail-out occurrence on a small polyped species Goniopora (pretty common). It was too small to glue and I lost it. :)

Those thing have a very very very bad servival rate in tanks. They 99.9% of the time never make it more then a year. My lfs stopped ordering them beacuse they are a waste also they had two tanks crash because of them aprentaly release some kind of toxins into the water

So be carfull with them you could lose every thing!

I seriously doubt their toxins have EVER caused a tank crash. Maybe your LFS just didn't know what they were doing?

No trust me these guys know what they are talking about this could be one of the best stores on the east coast. Owned and operated by the same family since like 1982 they have the best livestock i have every seen very healthy.

Most of there stuff is local grown by them or by local reefers in our club. There tanks are amazing check out chemical vally reef club on here some of there employess are on there its our local forum.

There are pics of several of there tanks also they are setting up a new 210 display with center over flows 2 side veiwable thats going to be amazing. This is like the central location for our club so there is the knowledge of about 100 members in play here.

I'm sure your LFS guys are knowledgable, but I'll stick with what I said about Goniopora.
