Worst use of clownfish EVER !!

Here's the scary part:

"The state of California requires schools to implement plans to address student safety in relation to conflicts that arise from gender issues."

This will be closed inevitably, because it's political...

I know this is really walking the line, but..

Are people bothered by this because they are using clownfish (and other animals), or is it the class material that bothers people?

well instead of shutting down the news of the story..why not just shut down people that make it ugly..

form your own opinion about the story, but this is not really off topic

I am a clownfish owner, a parent, a teacher and the sibling of a married lesbian couple. I realize that I may be in the minority here, and I realize that what I say is nothing more than my opinion... But I have no problem with this what-so-ever and I hope that more is done to show young people that differences are not evil. If this program saves one LGBT young person from physical or emotional violence, I think it was worth it.

It is my belief that the history of social issues has a progressive trend in the country and that LGBT issues are the civil rights issue of our time. It makes me proud that my daughter is growing up in a household where differences are embraced and hopefully in a state where my sister's marraige will soon be recognized as I believe it should be.

As I said, these are just my opinions.

This is the most important post in this thread. I'd like to believe that the animals are the issue at hand, sadly I doubt this is the case.

Todd and I have been pleasantly discussing the topic thru pm's but what the heck...how is this at all harming the animals?

It's not, which is why I posted what I did. They are only using the animals as examples of genetic differences in multiple species.

The only problem I see might be the age of the students but teaching them about differences and showing they occur in nature isn't the worst lesson you could teach.

maybe this thread wasn't a good idea..I'm not the kind to be hating on gay folks..But this sort of thing being taught to 5yo kids in public schools I also believe is not a good idea..

For every one opinion, there is a counter opinion,a 5yo could not understand this concept..teaching this later in life ?? fine in a private setting..It being a public school(for everyone) teaching one opinion is wrong..

What about Christian and Muslim and Catholic kids??This teaching is telling 5yo kids right what their religion is telling them wrong..

Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner!!!

+1!

My only problem with this is that clownfish aren't the best way to demonstrate what I believe they are trying to demonstrate or teach about.....I don't know much about clownfish biology, but I would assume they genetically/physically switch when they go from male to female. This gives them the ability to reproduce as a species. I do know enough about human biology that, whether gay or lesbian, they don't actually change their sex, just they have different sexual preferences. In order to reproduce, humans still need an egg from a genetic female and a sperm from a genetic male. IMO, being heterosexual or homosexual is based on more than just reproduction (for example, love or companionship), where clownfish switching from male to female is based more on reproduction only.

In spite of this, I am all for teaching diversity and acceptance, whether it's religious, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, etc.....I think the whole world, if a bit more tolerant, would be a much more peaceful place where all creatures live in harmony.
