Would you feel comfortable using this as a sump?

But if your looking for a 40gallon size sump, why not get a 40breeder from petco for $40? And for $15 bucks you can go grab a sheet of glass or even acrylic for a little more than that and make a good lid? Or even a 55gallon depending on dimensions you want. Tanks like that are cheap on craigs list too.
Glass? The cheap stuff will break every time you do maintenance on your skimmer. If you don't have the money to get a good acrylic sump, then buy a rubbermaid and mod the heck out of it.

A piece of 1/4 glass to fit a 40 breeder is not more than $15-20, and don't see how that would break easily lol. A real lid with a hinge from All-Glass is no more than $50 retail and that's the same stuff too.

I said glass over acrylic because acrylic will warp over time and sag, especially if he has cats who might lay on it lol

If I have to go with a smaller sump, I've been considering running another pipe from the display to the sump with a ball valve.

That way I could drain the sump, open the ball valve and drain the DT, drain the sump again and repeat until I dump the amount of water needed. That would allow me to run a much smaller sump. But it sounds like a pain.
