Wow down on Holiday Frag Swap

We need to take a step back on this Holiday frag swap. A frag swap is all fine and dandy, but we stopped doing them years ago due to lack of participation and quality of entered corals. If you want to do a swap fantasitic, but that's not what the holiday meeting has been about for the last few years.

The Holiday meeting was about rewarding the members who attended a meeting with a really good raffle. I mean for crine out loud we have almost $1300 in the raffle fund and we should be spending a large chuck of that on raffle corals.

I've been in this club a long time and I've scene things that work and things that don't and let me tell you for whatever reason swaps don't do well.

So do the swap, but we gotta buy and donate a bunch of nice stuff for the raffle.

Happy Holidays!

I thought the one from last year was a holiday frag swap? You know the one at Jofish where we drew letters and got to pick out corals in those number groups.

Wow that's a lot of money almost $1,300. Put some of it to good use to reward the members then for their great support. Buy a nice ticket item and some good colonies to enter the raffle.

+1

I thought it was a swap also since it was grouped and Tom was watching the time for each group to pick. That's the reason why I followed the same format. The colonies purchased will be fragged like mentioned and distributed to each member as a holiday gift (one sps colony and one zoa). Then a bunch of misc prizes like test kits, carbon, gfo etc...for the raffle. I'm sure a good 700 dent can be made by getting those items. In our pm conversation with BOD I threw out the idea of a led fixture but we decided to go with the smaller items.

It was reallly a raffle we just had everyone bring corals and the club bought a bunch of corals and instead of picking tickets which takes too long we did it in groups. That can work, but if it's just people bringing corals it won't be enough. Let's also remember that members like Grant brought 30 plus pieces to the meeting. We gotta buy a bunch too and cut up the ones we have like the chalices.

The void of Grant sharing his nice pieces is the biggest obstacle that we must overcome LOL. Plus cutting has to atleast be 1 week prior also!

I remember 2 frag swaps. The first was at Toms old place. The frag containers covered the entire table in front of his tank and were stacked 3 high. Then the one at joe fish last year. This one also had tons of frags and joefish donated done stuff to. Both cost $20 plus a 3 frag minimum to enter. With the funds going back to the club of course.

The club did buy several pieces that were fragged for the swap or put into the raffle. I just assumed it would be the same kind of thing.

I see where your coming from Bob but last years holiday meeting had a swap feel and it was a lot of fun. I think we can make it even better this year by purchasing some really nice colonies of corals to pick up. Also, members have been pretty good about bringing coral as of late and this swap should hopefully bring a larger gathering than usual.

'Last years swap' was on 2/10/13! Not exactly last year or holiday!! :)

I remember buying into the swap. Don't remember how much it was. Since I wasn't part of the executive council, I have no idea where the frags came from. I thought some were part of the 'three to enter' and part were club purchased and fragged by Grant.

There was also a drawing. I don't remember if there was a buy in. There were lots of small prizes.

I'm assuming we will do the same this year for the January meet.

And there will be grow out competition (GOC), $5 buy in and all participants get part of a fragged colony for some serious trash talking coral growing! :)

It was $20 buy in plus 3 corals for the swap and the all the corals were put into the drawing including the club buy since I don't remember ever getting a piece of the club buy corals....

The raffle was $5 a ticket.... I remember there was a tank donated by Grant, an RO/DI system, I believe a Kessil and a frag-a-rack (which I had won) and something else.

So atleast we are going away with the $20 buy in and just requiring three eligible frags :) That means more participants right... LoL

If we dope the $20 that's a lot of money not going back to the club. A lot of people show up to these and that is pretty significant portion of the club fund. Last year we had more then 20 people show up. Thats more then 25% of the money in the club fund now.

I'm not trying to weed people out if they don't have the $20 or anything, heck I would even give it to someone if they really didn't have it. I'm just saying the swap contributes pretty significantly to the club fund.

Just my .02

You brought up a valid point. Since it seems like we're trying to solidify an annual agenda on what to expect from a end of the year meeting. It's been harder than expected laying out a definitive plan that we can always use. Like for instant, some individuals thought it was a swap while others thought other wise. I will reference this fee with the BOD and get their thoughts of implementation.
