Wrasse compatibility?

I currently have a melanurus and an orange back fairy wrasse.
There were some aggression issues initially but that appears to have subsided completely. There are so many beautiful wrasses out there and I would like to add one more.
Any suggestions that would be a peaceful fit?

Throw one in and find out is one method.

Technically though you should add the least aggressive first. That being said I added 2 of the non reef safe versions at the same time and they were best of friends. That is until the one became a psychopath and tried to kill him... think he killed my goat fish as well...

Comparability varies, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Heck, I even had a banana wrasse once that was invert safe.

Here's what I would do.

1) Google my (wrasse x) is attacking my (wrasse y) and see how many hits you get. That'll be clue one on the success rate.

2) Ask yourself how you would feel losing money if 1 or 2 of the 3 wrasses dies or has to be sent packing.

3) Ask yourself how sure you are you can catch the little ******* if you have to remove it. (took me an hour and a half to get the lunare wrasse out of my tank)

Depending on how you respond to those questions should steer you towards whether you'll try it or not.

I've had 40 wrasses together in a 450g tank ... Melanurus should be fine with any fairy or flasher wrasse. Personally I've never had any long term success with orangebacks.

I have a melanurus with a christmas wrasse, exquisite fairy wrasse, and a linespot flasher wrasse they all get along great. My Christmas wrasse occasionally will “accidentally” tail whip him when hes flicking the sand searching for food and my melanurus will chase him for a minute but then its done and back to hunting

Hi! What size tank? I have a yellow Coris which is peaceful, also a Red Coris, I would for sure stay away from any of the lined Wrasses.....six line etc.....very agressive....

Go to live aquaria and look through the wrasses they have and check there compatibility. I agree about avoiding lined wrasses. There are many a story about them being fine one day and going rogue the next and killing fish twice their size. Just tossing one in and hoping for the best is a terrible idea.

I recently added a yellow corris and so far it has been great. The firefish hasn't been to pleased but is slowly coming out of hiding more. It hasn't gone after anyone and my swissguard basslet actually swims around more freely now. With the bright yellow he/she is the first fish noticed in my tank now.

Yea....I had my six line for several years, then as he reached his full size...the little 3 inch $#@@$$..... turned into a psychopath and started trying to kill my leopard Wrasses....it took me a few hours to catch him.....it was a HUGE PITA!!!!!

I really like the linespot flasher wrasse but I am starting to think maybe I shouldn't push my luck. My melanurus really bothered the orangebCk for the first week or two and I thought I was going to have to find a new home for one of them. If I were going to buy from lfs I wouldn't worry so much I would just return one but I was going to order from LA because I have a credit with them.

Yea totally understandable......mixing Wrasses is not a exact science. I have 9 Wrasses in my DT.....7 Leopards and 2 Coris Wrasses....and one Midas Blenny...that is my entire stock list.....what other fish do you have? How does your melanarus get along with your other fish?

Pair of oscellaris clowns royal gramma melanurus and orangebCk.
Looking to add Valentin saddle puffer and yellow tang in addition to one or two more fish TBD. The new wrasse would be one of the TBDs.

A Wrasse would be a great addition to your tank....as you can see Wrasses are my favorite type of fish. I would recommend a yellow Coris.....mine is very active and not shy. I don't have fairy or flasher Wrasses in my tank. I had have never had luck with them. I had a solar fairy Wrasse once and he hid all the time and died, he wasn't bullied, just timid. The second fairy I had was a blue head fairy, he was very agressive to my leopards....so back to the fish store he went.

And the melanurus is f e with everyone except the orangeback but that situation has improved tremendously. He still makes a halfhearted move in his direction every once in a while but for the most part they are swimming freely together.

I did buy an acclimation box after the problems with the two of them but have never used it. Anyone have any experience with these?
Do they help?

I know a lot of people who mix Wrasses use acclimation boxes. I have never used one. Check out the Wrasse lovers thread....there are plenty of peeps on there who would be happy to give you info....[emoji16]

I may be biased but I agree with adding a yellow corris, awesome fish. Have no problems with feeding either, it gladly eats frozen or nls pellets voraciously. If you can find one an adorned wrasse has some really nice colors. Would love to get one but I don't think 45g is big enough for both.

If your tank is only 75g it's not big enough for a yellow tang, min recommended size is 100g. A kole eye or tomini is best suited to a tank that size.

I made the mistake to putting my melanurus in the tank first and when I tried to add other wrasses, he was not having it. So I ended having to take him out for awhile until all the wrasses were added. I put him back in and everything was fine.
