Wrasses and Clams?

Just wondering if they are typically safe together? I bought a small Maxima this weekend and I believe the Neon Wrasse may have took him out. Not sure if it was intentional or not. He kept picking at him but not sure he was after the mantle or he saw "bugs" on it that he wanted. Either way he kept knocking him into the sand and not letting him sit on the rock to attach. I covered the clam with a tupperware container to keep him away, but this morning it appeared there was nothing in the shell. I will check when I get home and the lights are on, but for the future, should I avoid clams with the wrasse in there or could this just be an exception other than the rule?

the clam could've been weak and dying and the wrasse took this as a chance for some expensive dinner

That's probably what happened. Theoretically a wrasse could go after a clam, but I highly doubt it would actually be able to kill the clam except by harassing it into hiding until it starved.
