Wrong Skimmer Sent

System Info:
40 gal. breeder
29 gal. sump.
60+ lbs. of lr.
Approx. 55 gal. of water in the system
Zoas/Softies, eventually planning mixed reef.

I have been looking for an Octopus DNW-110 skimmer which is rated at 125 gal. I have had no luck with finding them in stock, so I went a step above and bought an Octopus DNW-150 (rated for 180 gal.). Unfortunately there was a mistake made and I was sent an Octopus DDNW-150 (rated for 350 gal.).

The DDNW-150 is obviously overkill since it is rated for 6+ times my actual water volume, but paying the difference and keeping it would allow me to avoid the hassle of repackaging, sending it back, and waiting for a replacement.

1. Would it hurt anything if I decided to keep it?

Thanks

Did you figure this out, or the company that sent it to you? Unless they are willing to ship you the correct unit immediately, and pay for all the shipping or send you a call tag, I would just keep it and let them eat the difference. Most skimmers are over-rated IMO, and I think it will work fine on your system at the expense of running the extra pump (more wattage). I would not pay extra for it though when you don't need it, unless you plan to upgrade some day.

if they sent the wrong item, then i'd say they are responsible for shipping the correct item. they should also send you a postage paid return sticker to send the wrong one back at no charge to you

Thanks for the feedback. I in no way intend to pay shipping charges or any other additional charges incurred for having the skimmer swapped out.

My question was, will such an over sized skimmer will adversely effect my system.

If the larger skimmer will work, I will not have to mess with shipping and waiting for a replacement.

I ran an oversized skimmer on a 50 gallon tank and sump and it worked ok. But when I put on a tank closer to its rating it kicked butt.

I'll trade you my DNW-110 for it ;) Great skimmers, just keep it. Many people try to obtain low nutrient systems in sps reefs. I would sell it and make some money :)

As I mentioned the only drawback is going to be the extra pump wattage. I think they pull about 30 watts? which used 24/7 adds up.

Keep it, I ran a massive skimmer for my little system.
but for a softie - lps reef, it is not always best to overkill

Lol, put the pump on a wavemaker. On for a minute, off for a minute..... that should get you a decent balance and use ~half the power ;)

Seriously though, unless you are wanting a soft-coral garden, just use it. I don't really think the difference in pump wattage will effect your electric bill--- since you forked out that much for nice skimmer, I'm sure the wattage difference isn't a big deal ;)

You'll probably want to fool around with the settings on it, though, to get the skim you are looking for.

By the way, this sounds like the PERFECT excuse to get another tank--- plumb them both into the same sump/skimmer!
