WTB: 55gal stand, or Aquarium/Stand combo

Being my first post not sure if this is okay to post here or not? Maybe someone can steer me to an intro thread as I plan to stick around.

Want to upgrade from my freshwater 10gal I've had for a year to something more substantial. I'd rather buy from some of the veterans here than take my chances on craigslist.

Sister has a 55gal set-up she's willing to give me but I don't have a stand! So option one is sourcing a 55gal stand.

I also would be interested in something else so long as it's within the 4ft wide range. Maybe you have a 46-65 gallon tank with stand you're willing to part with?

This is absolutely the right place to post as we have a very helpful community.

55s aren't very popular because their height and relative narrowness, which is great for freshwater, but makes them difficult to light for coral; should you chose to go that route in the future (We all ended up there). As it's the first tank it does not matter as much and will be a good practice run to figure out how and what you'd like to do.

Someone should have a stand but if you can't find anything, do not get one from a chain store as they are overpriced, very poorly made, and you will end up looking for a new stand in about a year.

Now that you mention it 55 gal did look a bit narrow when I stopped by AWA last week. I just thought that because it was a common size I might have better luck finding a proper stand.

I totally understand the concern with stand integrity which is part of my reluctance and me coming here after about a month of browsing. Looking at particle board stands at my local petsmart I couldn't help but picture them bowing in time and wondering where I could fit cinder blocks, assuming it doesn't completely fail all over my living room!

I have about 52" to work with. I don't want to go from 10gal to 120gal (just yet), but I think a 75gal 48X18X21 would be a my maximum alternative and wifey wouldn't be the wiser. :lmao:

Plus I might be able to keep my pleco (2" currently - admittedly a novice purchase but I'm learning fast) instead of trading it in for a bristle nose. Haven't crossed that bridge just yet on the perceived long term waste front, but my 3yr old is pretty attached to it, so I'm inclined to try and make it work to keep his interests peeked, even if it means having less fish and more frequent changes on a new tank.

Currently running an aquaclear 30 as of last month (best purchase so far I might add). Figure whatever I get I can marry the upgraded filtration with that filter, cycle the new aquairum with the robust pleco first, the two albino cory's I have next (1" each), while running the 10gal with the old kit filtration until I'm ready to transfer my 3 tetras, and then expand from there and have a little more fun with a community tank.

I also made the mistake with gravel with the cory... While their barbs are intact still and they seem to be doing well, I want to go with sand or pool filter next ASAP.

In short, thanks to JB, I'd like to pursue a 18" width tank so long as it doesn't exceed 75 gallons. Even better if any of you have a stand to match or can recommend one. An immediate buyer with a flatbed truck... Cash and Carry

Just to clarify you plan to upgrade from a 10 gallon fresh to a 75 Gallon fresh for now. Did you plan to convert to a 75 Gallon salt in the future or stick to fresh. This is technically a salt water forum BUT it is perfect for local people to buy and sell equipment to other locals it dosent matter if you plan to use for salt or fresh. I was mostly thinking about your filter options for the 75 it really depends if it is Salt or Fresh and also a 55 is not a bad option at all for Fresh but for the reasons mentioned previously it is not ideal for SALT.

Yes! Very important distinction! Although wider also allows better and more interesting aquascapes.

If you are planning on staying only fresh (for the time being:thumbsup, there may be freshwater forums that would be better for providing more fresh specific information. In addition Sacramento has an active freshwater club, the Sacramento Aquarium Society, which meets on the first Saturday of the month up in Folsom. Super helpful people and there is an auction where you can get cheap equipment, fish, and plants.

But you could also disregard all that and do saltwater

Sorry I didn't realize it was a salt forum but I think Jet has presented a pretty good argument for size.

I'll check out the other forum. I don't have an immediate plans for salt unless it would be possible to convert my 10 gallon tank to a one fish setup later? I'm sure I'll cross over at some point but baby steps.

IMO an 18"x18"×36"~40 gallons is a good size to start. Equipment is cheaper plus you can get a sweet rimless at that size. Look at some ADA tanks either fresh or salt. They are simple and clean. Also, if you do decide to go salt look at SC aquariums on ebay. They come with starfire glass on 3 sides, plus they're plumbed, come with stand, and skimmer. Good price point too.
