WTB: Mag 7

Just a mere suggestion but you may want to look at another type of pump. I have a mag 7 for my auto top off and I go through about 5-6 impellers a year. Maybe it is just me but I have had 3 of these all with the similar problem (shattering impellers). Any of the Mag pumps over 9.5 are a little bit different of a design and seem to have less problems.

Just a community service bulletin.

Could you possibly "T" it off of your main return pump? Or get a Mag 9.5 and use a ball valve to throttle it down a bit. Besides that depending on how you are going to plumb it to your chiller you are going to have some head loss to consider.

Thats a thought. I didn't realize the mag 7 was so crappy. I have an existing 9.5 as my main return pump. Maybe I'll sell that one and get a mag 12 or bigger and "T" them off like you are saying.

Good idea.

Jimmy.....I think it's just you.....:D

I've got 2 mag 7's about 5 or 6 years old and I've never had a problem with the impellers....but a mag 7 won't put out 700 gph flow unless it has oversized discharge piping and 0' of discharge head....you could try your mag 9.5 on the chiller and get a REAL pump for your return.....:D

Hey.... Be nice!!! :)

I will have 0' of head for my chiller to my sump so that shouldn't be an issue.

What do you have for your return pump?

I never said I had a REAL pump for my return.....

My 150 gal. softie tank has a Gen-x 6000 submersible (I really can't recommend this pump) and my 180 gal. sps tank has a Mag 36, I really don't have anything against the mag drive pumps....I've got 5 of them.

IF you're going to buy a mag drive pump, I'd get it here:

Big Al's

but I'd stay away from the pondmaster pumps, I don't think they're safe for saltwater.

I love my Quite One 6000.But of corse thats not a "real pump".Just like JJJimmy sayed ,mine is split.Put a shut off in the pipe to the tank. That will control the the flow to the chiller, with min. head loss.I am running a 150 with 3 400's.and a 1/4 horse chiller.

Drew, you can buy my Mag 18 if you think you can split it for both the tank and chiller. I used it for less than 2 minutes, you know the story.
