This happens occasionally. The best things to do to avoid it is to make sure the trigger is well fed and never feed live food.
Which were in there first? I've also found the odds are improved if the shrimp are already well established before the trigger is added.

Ok, I guess I will reconsider my choice due to its large size. I will keep this in mind if I decide to get one for a larger tank

This is correct. I blame myself in part for the watchman goby my large BT took down because I did not make sure he was well feed before introduction. In addition, I did not leave the lights off long enough. Mine also co-existed with my CB shrimp that preexisted him without any problem. The one I continue to have does as well.
