Xenia and Chaeto: Anyone have a problem?

I have a small colony of silver xenia in my 8 Gallon Biocube. It was flourishing up until around the time I added some Chaeto into the aquairium to help with natural water filtration as others have done here.

Within a few days it seems my Xenia started to shrink a little. They don't extend as far and look almost dehydrated and has become progressivly more so as the Chaeto has grown. There have been no signs of disease or rapid die off, its just clearly not happy.

I haven't changed my maintanance procedures - continue to do about a 15% water change weekly. Temp is right aroung 79-80 and PH is 8.2.

Is it possible the Chaeto is pulling nutrients out of the water that were important for the Xenia? Has anyone else had similar problems?

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

the chaeto is probally pulling all those nutrients out
xenia can do a good job of keeping nutrients down

Xenia is mainly a photosynthetic coral though...if you have enough light, they will thrive...how many watts per gallon of light do you have? I have a 10g that has a good amount of chaeto in it and silver xenia (just like yours ;) ) that grows like a monster weed in my front yard...also, where do you have your xenia placed? maybe it just doesn't like where it is in your tank...I had mine on the sand at first and it loved it...thinking "Hey, it thrives off of light so I'll slowly move it closer to get more light"...well, it immediately became angry and started shriveling up...gave it a few days to acclimate to the new position which was only about an inch or two off the sand and it got even more angry...I put it back on the sand and it has been happily pulsing away since...it has gotten to the point I'm gonna frag it in to several small pieces and try to get a specific area of my tank to be a xenia carpet... :)
