xenia control

Hi All,
I have a xenia coral that is growing too large, I am trying to limit its growth to a specific rock in my tank. It is connected to a large rock near the bottom of my tank and is to hard to remove it to trim it up. Can I place torch corals around it to help confine it to that one spot?

If they like your tank, xenias kind of go where they want. I have a group that I routinely scrape off and move back down 6 inches and within 2 months they are right back again where I scraped them. I've not heard of using other corals to confine it - mine will actually crawl over coral if given the chance, though I don't have torch coral. I use the non sharp side of xacto knife to scrape off xenia and move them. Have to be very careful though as any little bit left (on rock or floating) can start a whole new group.

I have torches right by Xenia, it does not stop it. Not sure on the type of Xenia I have though , it's sort of a soft purple colour and doesn't seam to spread at quite the same speed as the white one. At some point or another I have had Xenia growing by all sorts of corals and it just tends to wander around the tank.

Xenia coral spread like wild fire. a single tiny polyp can land somewhere on the sandbed and start to grow a whole new stalk without you even realizing. I only keep xenia in my sump. Isolating the rock might help, but they can drop tiny buds and float around and start growing somewhere else.

I agree with all that posted, although I would use Frogspawn since it is less destructive than a torch. But as one stated once you have Xenia it will make its way around the whole tank. I got my first piece from someone who had it in his tank and a piece floated up and was shredded by his power head which spread it throughout the tank. When I sold this tank the person did not want it so one by one he would take a rock out and do a FW dip and scrub until it was all gone. The tank ended up being solid GSP and Shrooms.
