Just got a aving hand xenia and would like to ask is it a good indictor of a good placement is it started has to wave I know how it care for it but just want to know if this is normal

If the polyps are extended and it's waving/pulsing vigorously, the placement is fine. When my xenia was unhappy the polyps weren't outstretched fully and pulsing was subdued/intermittent. In a different location, they're now fully open and happy.

My xenia liked high light and moderate to heavy flow. I fragged xenia for two years and BTAs for a year. It became a pain to frag them so I got rid of all of them. I also dosed iodine at the time.

Well, if it is waving hand xenia - AKA anthelia (my lfs called anthelia that...so who knows).... Mine looked horrible for the first week I had it... shrunk a ton and never opened, then I moved it to a corner with virtually no flow and it started to recover... then recently I added a new seio and the thing went downhill again... my anthelia really really hates flow.... alot.... just a thought...

Although xenia likes a lot of light, it doesn't need it. I would place it under a good light souce higher in the tank. Xenia likes to gently wave back and forth. My xenia grows like a weed. I couldn't give it away fast enough.

You will need to stay on top of the xenia. They crash fast.

I feel that different colonies all require different specs. It seems that with xenia there is no rhime or reason to what each colony wants. It seems they are all different.

I thnk xenia generally will trive in a low light spot in the tank. I have mine in the bottome of a PC lit tank and they are taking over. It is a fulltime job to pick them off the rocks and get rid of them. It is a good thinkg th LFS likes to take them for credit. Mine are also in a lower to medium flow area.

I guess it just depends. I don't keep Xenia myself but the lfs has said that it won't "clutch" unless it's under halides. Any truth to this?

none whatsoever... look at how many people post on here complaining that it took over their tanks under pc / t5s ...

I have been told that xenia is very tempermental. You may have the perfect ideal conditions, and it won't do well at all. Other the other hand, your water and light might be junk and the xenia thrives. I do have mine right under a halide, but I don't know if that is a factor or not.

My xenia pulse al the time. I have not had a problem with them in any condition. When I first got them they were given to me and I had 10-20 ppm nitrates and they did fine, pulsed immediately. Now I have a refugem and 0 nitrates and they are still doing great. They have taken over my entire tank.

No one understands why they pulse and by the same token no-one understands why they thrive in some tanks and not in others.

I think if you are able to keep any type of coral your tank is a success and you just have to find which type does the best and focus on that. Just my 2 cents.

thank you for all the responses It is now fully extended and waving constantly on it first day so far it apears to be happy and my anglerfish is sitting right under trying to get some food from me even though he already has eaten today I really want to thank people for any advice more information never hurt
