xenia r seasonal

it is to my understanding that pulsing xenia r seasonal
with a short life span they will grow for a varied number of months and then die off with little or no warning, only to come back, sprouting all over the tank in a couple of months or so.

im asking this in regards to my system
a seemingly unstoppable healthy growing colony stopped dead in its tracks with no obvious culptrets. other more fragile coral still in tact and 100% healthy.

in my research i learned that at 3 of the local retailers stores as well as other friends tanks, their xenia also started to die off 4 no apparent reason. at almost the exact same time as mine give or take a week or so

coinsidence?

hit me back

thanks

I've had the same colony of Xenia thriving for over a year now. I've read that Xenia has a habit of melting away for no aparent reason, but I've not encountered it ..........yet. Just waiting for my turn! I have noticed that mine like light and a somewhat higher ph, and an addition of Iodine once a week. Hope this helps. Good luck!

mine did it to me, melted for no reason. I tossed it out so i dont know if it would have came back. I think we encounter alot of unexplained things with our reefs, best i can figure is moon cycles still have an effect on the corals in captive. I have noticed several times with hard and soft corals when something in my tank acts up or dies, other people will have the same problem at about the same time.

I recall reading that in the wild, Xenia has one of the shortest lifespans of all coral (of course I dont remember which of my books that was in- sorry). It was reported to cycle out after a max of 2 years.

Xenia in my tank does follow a similar schedule. I get dense, fast growing stands of it for about a year and a half, and then almost all of it melts away within a week or two. No observable change in any other corals, and its happened a number of times. There are always a few patches of 'skin' left on rocks here and there, and within a month or so, I see new heads popping back up. I actually just had a dieoff not too long ago, and the few patches are coming back up like normal.

Ive no idea why it does that- in captivity or in the wild- but Ive read enough accounts of it happening that it doesnt worry me anymore.

right on thanks guys
so as the xenia is "melting" away, it is still pulsing! ***?
