XXL Toadstool leather removal help

This coral has outgrown my aquarium. It is beautiful and I love it but I would rather not cut it up into a million pieces. I have fragged a piece for myself and I would like to let someone with a larger tank enjoy this coral. I have a 28g nano and I know I have let this go too long, the coral is literally the height of the tank to the water line and isnt stopping. When fully extended it can easily stretch across more then half of the aquarium. My question is pretty basic. What is my approach to taking this coral out? I'm assuming I am going to have to have saltwater on hand to replace the water volume the coral was taking up? In order for someone to actually take it home they'll need a bucket. Powerhead at the base? Gently pull?

I want to do this the right way that is the least stressful and painful.

Thanks!

Kevin

Going with a side view just to give you some scale and actually see the green polyps. If I go full tank shot you will see nothing but stalk!

your best bet is to just pop it in a bucket with water rock and all. leathers arent like anemones as they cant be just pealed off a rock. how much you asking for it out of curiosity

Be careful if you plan on removing it from the water. Turn off the lights and anger it some. Get it to shrink up as much as you can. If you try to remove it when fully expanded the water weight can tear it up.

I have one (much smaller though) that I had to move in my tank that was attached to a rock. I was told to simply cut it at the base with a fresh sharp razor blade and move it. This worked perfectly for me. Peeling it off the rock was out of the questin as it was really stuck on there. It took a day or so for it to fully extend its polyps again and get comfortable in its new location. Cut away!

Yup if you can't peel it from the rock or don't want to move the rock with it you can cut it off clean just above where its attached to the rock. Leathers are very forgiving. However whatever you leave attached to the rock will eventually start growing polyps and become a new one. Make sure to scrape it all off if you don't want a new one there.

That is gorgeous.............. Whats the hieght and dia of it and how long did it take to get that size.

Thanks for all the comments and responses. Took me about 2 full years for it to get to this size. Its about 15" tall and about the same wide. It is the nicest specimen I have ever owned hands down. I cant post the price in this thread or it will be removed.

I do not know how I fell about the whole cutting the bottom approach. I cant take the rock out because it is actually attached to two rocks. Im thinking I will have to attempt to peel it off gently and hope it actually comes off. I guess my plan b would be to take a razor blade to the bottom. Even when I fragged a piece off there was alot of fluid that came off. Didnt seem to bother anything in the tank but I cant imagine cutting the whole stalk.

Absolutely Gorgeous!!!! :bounce3:

Wish I lived closer!! I'd come take it from you!!! :lol2:
but a 2 1/2 hr drive.. not so good!! lol

maybe use the razor and cut along the bottom of his stalk, as close to the rock as you can.
other suggestion.. can you take a chisel and hammer to the rocks themselves? or are they too buried deep in the tank?

Best of luck to you!!!! Congrats on the Beautiful Creature!!!

This is my old setup with large leather when fully open it took up about 20 inches in width. Since then i took down the setup and went to a bigger reef. It now have more space .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BTQUkr4aug .
I actually had 2 but sold one, but was told it died. I had it for about 3 years before i sold the one. I also read sometimes they don't transfer well.

Thanks again for the responses and compliments you guys are great. I actually have to get the toadstool off of the two rocks that the base is attached too. I can not move the rocks out of the tank or I would have to break it all down. I cant fit a hammer in the spot its in. That would be the best option if it was possible

Here are a few more photos. Shows you the full tank shot (sorry for some of the GHA, been fighting it off) another side view which shows it connected to two rocks, and the last my clown loving life and to show the beautiful green polyps up close.
