Yasha Gobies

So I am in the process in setting up my 2nd Saltwater tank and was looking at maybe having a pair of these gobies with a red banded pistol shrimp. The aquarium is a ten gallon. It has no other fish/inverts in the tank. The Pair of Yasha's would be the only two fish in the tank. But I am very skeptical about buying 130$ worth of fish that only get 2-3 inches long. I've never really bought any fish that are over 50$. Money is very short right now so it would be a one strike an your out kind of deal.. Should I go for the Pair w/ Shrimp or should I go with the standard 1 Yasha and 1 shrimp? Is there any advantage to getting 2 Yasha's instead of one? I would also have a sand sifting sea star. Would the shrimp eat/harass it? Would I be able to keep coral along with the goby/gobies/shrimp? Same with the sea star, is it compatible with say, mushrooms? What about other soft corals?

Petco has a $1 per Gallon sale now so you could get a bigger tank for just a little more money that may be more forgiving than a ten gallon. Then get the pair now and possibly slowly upgrade to get more.

I don't know of any "advantage" of a pair over a single but they are cool little fish. I have one that I moved from my IM pico 4 gallon to my 72x24x21 DT tank 6 months ago. Love watching him and his pistol shrimp interact. They really are the perfect fish for a small tank like yours as they rarely leave a very small area....at least mine doesn't despite 6 feet of tank bottom to roam.

I don't think a sand sifting starfish is a good idea in a tank your size.

If money is issue then I would get one and if it did not make it you could then get another one. That way you have two shots instead of one.

I was able to buy one on Sunday for about 40 bucks so the prices are coming down. They are very easy fish to sex so you don't have to buy a pair right away and can just pickup one now. I am keeping the single in our 12g right now. We have had a pair in the 12 in the past, you just have to be really good with water changes.

Thanks for the help! I think I'll just go for a Goby and Shrimp pair for now! Is there something I could substitute instead of the star? I've heard Nassarius snails will clean the sand too. About how many would I need for this size of tank?

i have 1 in my 29 gallon he has been in there for over a month but have not seen him since day 1. never had a spike so i know he is alive in there somewhere lol

Did not see you mention the sand sifting star, I would absolutely stay away from one in a 10g tank. Nassarius and cerith snails will do so much better and serve the same function.
