Yashi Hashi Gobi

Hey,

I went to my LFS today and saw a Yashi Hashi Gobi there- Small guy- I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them- I have a Nano 24- Current Fish livestock: Black Ocellaris, Rainsford Goby, Helfrichi Firefish- I also have a cleaner shrimp and various small cuc inhabitants.
I have about a 2.5" fine sandbed, good live rock setup with a nice cave in the middle part..
Do you think this Yashi would do well in a setup like that? The fish was stunning- I've read in places that they need to be fed a few times a day? Does anyone have any input?
I'm still kind of new and the tank is about 3 months going now and doing well so far..

Thanks!

A yashi hashi goby would be a perfect fish for that setup - I would strongly encourage you to buy him with his symbiotic shrimp (commonly called candycane pistol shrimp) - it is fascinating to watch!

Any fish will benefit from multiple feedings a day but I have had yahsis thrive on one big feeding a day - they are very capable of grabbing big pieces of mysis.

It's yasha hashe I believe. I would think you'd be fine. They're a pretty small fish. How is your Rainsford doing? What does it eat?

Pistol Shrimp

Pistol Shrimp

Hi,

Thanks for the reply- Yea i've been reading up on the pistol shrimp / Goby team. Sounds like the way to go..

I'm not sure if my LFS store had any- so I had a couple questions on this- If my LFS didn't have any pistol shrimp would it be OK to add later or do they need to be added togther to form the bond?

Also:
I'm concerned will my cleaner shrimp have issues with this pistol shrimp? The cleaner shrimp is VERY active and is all over the place.

I also forgot to mention I have 3 tiny sexy anemone shrimp.. Would they just become food for the pistol shrimp as well or would they all get along?
Any input would greatly help. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on this Yashi Gobi!

Thanks,
TryP

The pistol will not bother anybody - it will not venture more than an inch from its burrow and will retreat at the first sign of any trouble.

You can add then separately but I prefer to add them as a duo - the shrimp digs the burrow for the goby so it will feel more secure as the new addition.

Rainsford

Rainsford

Hey Small Alien,

The Rainsford is doing well actually so far. He's grown and filled out somewhat since I got him about 5 weeks ago. He constantly picks at some algae growth along the back wall of the tank and also sifts mouthfuls of sand from the sandbed. I usually let some algae grow on one side of the glass near bottom, that faces a wall in my apt anyway, not scraping it off too often to allow him some extra areas to pick through-
I've never seen him eat any pellets or Cyclop-eeze when I feed the tank. But if I turkey baste algae off parts of the tank, the rainsford will actually grab small pieces of the algae out of the water.
I've also added a bottle of Tigger-Pods to the tank a couple times so far to try and boost the pod population for the Ranisford.

Hey- Thanks for all the replies! I pulled the trigger- the LFS had no pistol shrimps but they said they should get some in, in the next couple days. My new Yasha is acclimating as we speak!
She's amazing looking! I had the dude at my LFS feed some frozen foods and she didn't take any- so I'm a little concerned but the guy told me she has been eating the frozen for a few days and I know the guy for a couple months and he seems straight forward. if not I guess I'll have to mix live brine with frozen to try and coax.

Good work! I would not worry about it eating - they are voracious feeders - once it finds a spot where it is comfortable it will start eating.

Keep an eye out for another goby, or when they get the pistols in see if they will pair two up - I had a pair of Yashis and a pair of pistols in the same burrow - they moved a lot of sand but it was awesome to see them hang out. Both the pistols and the gobies will usually pair very readily.

Hey Thanks! I'll keep a look out- I just picked up a macro lens the other day and I was able to get a couple good pics of the Yasha because she's still acclimating in the bag- Let me know what you guys think: www.darkavenger.com/yasha I named her Iria. heh

I just added a yashi hashe goby today, and just as above no pistol shrimps in the store. will any pistol shrimp do or is there one that is native to the area the goby comes from? any info. is appreciated. These little guys look amazing!

Pistol Shrimp for Yasha

Hey Chris!
Congrats on the fish! They are really cool indeed!
I think they pair best with Randall's Pistol shrimp which is colored very similar to them and look great together:

They can be hard to find.. But many times your LFS can order one for you and you can wait a bit. I had to wait almost a month for my shop to get one in for me but it was well worth the wait..

Good Luck!
